Unlike us, dogs and cats rarely cry or complain when they're in pain. In fact, many pets instinctively hide discomfort until it becomes severe.

⚠️ Signs your pet may be in pain:
🐶 Reluctance to jump, climb stairs or go for walks

Hot pavements can burn paws—check the ground with the back of your hand before walking.

🌿🐱 The Most Dangerous Plants & Household Toxins for Cats 🐱🌿

Cats are naturally curious and love to explore, sniff and chew plants. Unfortunately, some of the most common flowers and household items can be extremely dangerous—even life-threatening.

🚨 Plants that can cause severe poisoning:

🌸 Lilies (Lilium & Hemerocallis species) – EMERGENCY!
Even a tiny amount of pollen, a single leaf, or drinking water from a vase can cause acute kidney failure. If you suspect your cat has been exposed, seek veterinary attention immediately—even if they seem perfectly well.

🌺 Sago Palm
Every part of this plant is poisonous, especially the seeds. It can cause severe liver failure and can be fatal.

🌼 Autumn Crocus
Can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, organ damage and bone marrow suppression.

🪴 Cyclamen
The tubers (roots) are particularly toxic and may cause severe vomiting, seizures and heart rhythm abnormalities.

🌷 Tulips, Hyacinths & Gladiolus
The bulbs are the most toxic part and can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea and mouth irritation.

🌿 Dieffenbachia, Philodendron & Peace Lily
These plants contain calcium oxalate crystals, causing intense pain, drooling and swelling of the mouth and throat.

🌵 Aloe Vera
Can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy if ingested.

⚠️ Other common household toxins to keep away from cats:

🍫 Chocolate
🧅 Onions, garlic, chives and leeks
🍇 Grapes and raisins
🍬 Xylitol (found in some sugar-free products)
☕ Coffee, tea and energy drinks
💊 Human medications (especially paracetamol, ibuprofen and antidepressants)
🧴 Essential oils (tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, wintergreen and others)
🧼 Cleaning products and detergents
🐀 Rodenticides and slug pellets
🧪 Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) – even a tiny amount can be fatal.

🐾 What should you do if your cat has eaten something toxic?

✅ Remove any remaining plant or substance.
✅ Keep any packaging or take a photo of the plant if possible.
✅ Contact your vet immediately—don't wait for symptoms to develop.

Many poisons are far easier to treat when caught early.

💚 Prevention is always the best medicine. Before bringing a new plant into your home or garden, check whether it is safe for pets.

🕷️ TICKS: SMALL PARASITES, SERIOUS RISKS

Ticks are not only unpleasant—they can transmit infections while feeding on your pet’s blood.

In the UK, ticks may transmit:

🔸 Lyme disease – may cause fever, lethargy, swollen lymph nodes and painful or stiff joints. In rare cases, kidney complications may develop.
🔸 Anaplasmosis – may cause fever, reduced appetite, weakness, lameness, anaemia and low platelet levels.
🔸 Babesiosis – damages red blood cells and may cause severe anaemia, pale or yellow gums, weakness and dark or red urine.
🔸 Ehrlichiosis – may cause fever, lethargy, weight loss, enlarged lymph nodes, low platelets and abnormal bleeding.

Lyme disease and anaplasmosis are considered endemic in the UK. Babesiosis and ehrlichiosis are more commonly associated with pets that have travelled or been imported, although locally acquired cases have also been reported.

✅ How can you protect your pet?

🐾 Use a suitable, veterinary-approved tick-prevention treatment based on your pet’s individual risk.

🐾 Check your pet thoroughly after walks, especially after visiting woodland, moorland or areas with long grass.

🐾 Pay particular attention to the ears, neck, face, armpits, groin, between the toes and around the tail.

🐾 Remove attached ticks promptly using a proper tick-removal tool. Never squeeze, crush, burn or cover an attached tick with oil or alcohol.

🐾 Continue checking regularly—even when using preventative treatment, as no product is 100% effective. Ticks may be active at different times throughout the year.

⚠️ Always use a product specifically approved for your pet’s species and weight. Never apply a dog-only tick product containing permethrin to a cat, as this can cause life-threatening poisoning.

Be cautious of unlicensed “natural” or herbal products promoted online. Natural does not automatically mean safe or effective.

If you find a tick and are unsure how to remove it, or your pet becomes unwell following a tick bite, please contact your veterinary practice.

☀️ Summer Toxins: Keeping Dogs and Cats Safe 🐾

Summer brings warmer weather, garden time and barbecues—but it can also expose our pets to several dangerous toxins.

⚠️ Common summer hazards include:

🌿 Toxic plants and flowers
Lilies are particularly dangerous to cats—even a small amount of pollen or water from a vase can cause severe kidney damage. Foxgloves, azaleas, rhododendrons and many other garden plants can also be toxic.

🐌 Slug pellets, weedkillers and pesticides
Keep pets away from treated areas and store all gardening products securely. Even products described as “pet-friendly” should be used carefully and according to the instructions.

💧 Blue-green algae
This may grow in lakes, ponds and slow-moving water during warm weather. Do not allow your dog to swim in or drink from water that appears green, foamy or discoloured.

🍖 Barbecue food and leftovers
Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, fatty foods and cooked bones can all cause serious problems. Corn cobs are not poisonous, but they can cause a life-threatening intestinal blockage if swallowed.

🗑️ Compost and mouldy food
Mouldy food and compost may contain toxins that can cause vomiting, tremors, seizures and a dangerously high body temperature.

🐈 Dog flea treatments used on cats
Some dog flea and tick products contain permethrin, which is extremely toxic to cats. Never apply a dog product to a cat unless specifically instructed by your vet.

Signs of poisoning may include:

▪️ Vomiting or diarrhoea
▪️ Excessive drooling
▪️ Shaking, twitching or seizures
▪️ Weakness, wobbliness or collapse
▪️ Difficulty breathing
▪️ Unusual behaviour or extreme tiredness

🚨 If you think your pet may have eaten, licked or touched something toxic, contact a veterinary practice immediately—even if they appear well.

Do not make your pet vomit or give home remedies unless a veterinary professional specifically advises you to do so. Keep the packaging or take a photograph of the suspected substance, as this can help identify the appropriate treatment.

Skin allergies are one of the most common health problems in dogs and cats, and they can have a big impact on their comfort and quality of life.

🐶🐱 What are skin allergies?

An allergy occurs when your pet's immune system overreacts to something that is normally harmless. Common triggers include:
🐾 Pollen, grass, dust mites and mould.
🐾 Flea bites – even a single bite can trigger intense itching in some pets.
🐾 Certain food ingredients or proteins.
🐾 Contact with products such as shampoos, detergents or certain plants.

Signs to look out for include:
🔸 Persistent scratching, licking or chewing.
🔸 Red, inflamed or sore skin.
🔸 Recurrent ear infections.
🔸 Hair loss or thinning of the coat.
🔸 Hot spots or scabs.
🔸 Brown staining on the paws from excessive licking.
🔸 A strong or unpleasant smell from the skin or ears.

Unfortunately, allergies rarely resolve on their own. Constant scratching can damage the skin, allowing bacteria and yeast to multiply, leading to painful secondary infections.

💙 How can you help your pet?

✔️ Keep up to date with effective flea prevention all year round.
✔️ Bathe your pet only with shampoos recommended for sensitive skin.
✔️ Wipe paws after walks if pollen or grass seems to make symptoms worse.
✔️ Prevent excessive scratching by seeking advice early.
✔️ Feed a balanced diet, and only change foods under veterinary guidance if a food allergy is suspected.
✔️ Arrange a veterinary examination if the itching lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, or if you notice sore skin or ear problems.

During a veterinary visit, your vet may recommend skin or ear cytology to look for bacteria or yeast, discuss whether food or environmental allergies are likely, prescribe medication to relieve itching, treat any infections, and help create a long-term plan to keep your pet comfortable.

The good news is that, although allergies usually can't be cured completely, they can often be managed very successfully. With the right treatment and ongoing care, most pets can live happy, comfortable and itch-free lives.

🐾 If your dog or cat is scratching more than usual, don't ignore it. Early treatment can make a huge difference and prevent more serious skin problems from developing.

Meet Max, our gentle giant. 💙🐾

Max suffers from severe osteoarthritis in his back and hips and has had two very difficult flare-ups where he was unable to stand or move properly.

With a personalised pain management plan, including oral medication, joint-support injections and his monthly pain relief injection, Max has responded beautifully.

🌞🐾 Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Hot Weather 🐾🌞

The warm weather can be lovely for us, but it can quickly become dangerous for our furry friends. Dogs, cats and rabbits can all suffer from heatstroke, so a few simple precautions can make a big difference.

💙 Here are our top tips to help keep your pets cool:

🐶 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.

🌡️ Check the pavement before walking. If it's too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

💧 Always provide plenty of fresh, cool drinking water and place extra water bowls around the house and garden.

🏡 Make sure your pet always has access to shade and a cool, well-ventilated place to rest.

🧊 Cooling mats, damp towels and frozen treats can help keep them comfortable. Frozen Kongs or ice cubes made with a little low-salt chicken broth can also be a great enrichment treat.

🚗 Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

🐰 Rabbits and small pets also need extra care. Keep hutches out of direct sunlight, provide wrapped frozen water bottles for them to lie beside (not directly against them), and ensure they always have fresh water available.

⚠️ Know the signs of heatstroke:
• Excessive panting
• Heavy drooling
• Bright red gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Collapse or seizures

🚨 If you suspect heatstroke, every minute counts.

✔️ Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately.
✔️ Pour cool tap water (not ice-cold water) continuously over their body, paying particular attention to the belly, groin, paws and legs.
✔️ Place them in front of a fan if one is available to help increase cooling.
✔️ Offer small amounts of cool drinking water if they are alert and able to drink, but do not force them to drink.
❌ Do not use ice, ice baths or very cold water, as these can reduce effective cooling and may make the situation worse.
📞 Contact your vet immediately and continue cooling your pet on the way to the practice.

A little extra care during hot weather can make all the difference. Our pets rely on us to keep them safe, comfortable and cool.
