Got a reactive, anxious, or easily distracted dog? It’s time to start using patterning in your training. Here’s how to do it & why it’s a gamechanger:

What to do:

👩‍🎓 Teach 3-5 new tricks - think spin, leg weave, nose touch… anything that promotes focus + proximity
🔁 Combine as a pattern - create a sequence out of the tricks so you have a 5-15 second flow
🗓️ Repeat rehearsal of this sequence every single day until your dog can do it in his sleep and knows the pattern off by heart
🧠 Watch his brain change - as you take your routine on tour and start to practise it in new environments / around distractions + triggers, you will see your dog’s confidence grow and their behavioural responses to things they used to find overwhelming, CHANGE

➡️ The science bit:
The brain craves predictability. When your dog learns a short, reliable sequence of behaviours, it activates the brain’s reward and pattern recognition systems; this lowers stress, increases focus, and creates an empowering sense of control.

➡️ Why it works:
For reactive or nervous dogs, the world feels unpredictable and overwhelming. But a rehearsed, familiar pattern offers a safe mental framework; it’s something they know how to do, and feel good doing, and as they practise nearer and nearer to their triggers, they learn to transfer that confident feel-good energy into previously overwhelming scenarios.

➡️ It builds:
– Confidence
– Emotional regulation
– Engagement with you
– A shift from reactive to responsive

💡 So string together 3-4 simple tricks and start rehearsing them like a little dance routine. It’s not just fun… it’s therapy disguised as play.

If your dog struggles with recall, confidence, or staying close in new environments, this one skill can change everything. It’s called middle, and here’s why it’s so powerful:

✔️ Functions as an emergency recall
✔️ Gives you instant control without force
✔️ Teaches your dog that being near you is safe and rewarding
✔️ Builds confidence in new or stressful environments

Practise this consistently, and middle becomes a reliable, life-saving skill, as your dog learns that being near you = safety + rewards.

💡 Save this so you can train it step-by-step later - your dog (and your peace of mind) will thank you! 🙌

This concept has been living rent-free in my head ever since I came across it…

Your dog isn’t just experiencing the walk differently to you. They’re experiencing an entirely different version of the world!

Are ghosts real? Is it all a simulation? Has my mind exploded?! It’s all possible. But my main message is this: let your dog stop to sniff stuff. Their world is so RICH with smelly data and yours just isn’t! So try to make your walk less about how far you walked, and more about how much of their world your dog actually got to stop and experience! ♥️

🧩 MONDAY: The Object Shapeshifter

Choose one engagement action your dog knows (nose touch, paw touch, front paws up etc.) & teach them to perform it with as many different household objects as you can find.

☑️ Changing the context while keeping the behaviour the same builds flexibility, confidence and positive experiences with novelty.

🚦 TUESDAY: Red Light, Green Light

On a walk, count how many times your dog voluntarily checks in with you. Reward every check-in then release them straight back to exploring.

☑️ Builds engagement without nagging & encourages attention around distractions.

⏮️ WEDNESDAY: The Reverse Relay

Teach your dog to move backwards with you, then start transferring it across contexts: beside you, in middle position, around an object, onto a platform, etc.

☑️ Proprioception, body awareness, coordination and learning to follow your movement rather than relying on a lure.

🧐 THURSDAY: The Pattern Breaker

Take a familiar sequence your dog knows (e.g. hand touch → spin → middle → sit) & deliberately change one element. Can they adapt rather than just blindly run the rehearsed routine?

☑️ Cognitive flexibility and learning to cope with change.

🕵️‍♀️ FRIDAY: The Agency Experiment

Give your dog an unfamiliar but safe object & don’t tell them what to do with it. Watch what they offer + start reinforcing increasingly interesting interactions: looking → approaching → touching → manipulating it.

☑️ Optimism, curiosity, agency & confidence with novelty.

🛤️ SATURDAY: The Distance Game

Choose something that has a positive association for your dog (a toy, a person, environmental feature, etc.) & work on moving towards it, away from it and past it, reinforcing your dog’s ability to shift between approaching and leaving.

☑️ Teaches that proximity to something exciting doesn’t mean ‘GO GO GO!’ + builds flexibility around arousal.

💡 SUNDAY: The Cue Remix

Pick a cue your dog knows and change something about YOU every time you give it - sit down, turn around, start dancing, lie down, etc.

☑️ You’re testing understanding, flexibility and generalisation, rather t

So you just got back from watching Heart of the Beast and now you’re obsessed with finding cool new ways to spend time with your dog and deepen your bond? Well I’ve got you covered with this progressive training game that’s ideal for mini engagement sessions or simply for rainy-day exercise options.

✔️ Exercises your dog’s brain and body
✔️ Builds focus, confidence & coordination
✔️ Improves proprioception & flexibility
✔️ Channels energy in a calm, organised way
✔️ Is perfect for rainy days, evenings, or busy schedules

The magic is in the predictable back-and-forth pattern. Dogs learn best when challenge is layered into something that already feels safe and familiar - which is why this is especially powerful for nervous, adolescent or easily overstimulated dogs.

Once your dog understands the pattern, you can get creative:

➡️ Add obstacles
➡️ Build body awareness
➡️ Boost engagement

Save this and try it later - your dog will thank you 🐶

Follow for more science-led, real-life dog training you can actually use, from a certified dog nerd who cries at the end of every dog movie, regardless of who survives..!

P.S. If you need extra help with any of the behaviours or obstacles shown, I break down how to teach each of them individually in previous reels - have a browse and save your favourites! 💾✅
