A young Labrador in for training, still got a way to go, but wouldn’t walk to heel on or off the lead when he first came in, let alone bring his retrieves back.

Well we completed our first run of the championship with our Springer Spaniel dog, Leahanie Zeus.
Birds sitting very tight, we quickly found and flushed a hen bird, shot over a fence. We were moved for the retrieve, lifting the dog over a fence to send him. Handler error on my part meant I rushed the dog, and had to give a directional cast to pick the bird. After lunch we moved ground, when Alf was hunting with plenty of pace and style, bird shot for the dog on the other side, whilst they were out on a retrieve, a rabbit and hen bird both broke cover directly in front of my dog, he never moved and both pheasant and rabbit were shot. Alf had marked the pheasant but we were asked for the rabbit first, a couple of casts and we had that back to hand, we were then sent for the pheasant, which he very quickly returned with, that completed our run.
Unfortunately we weren’t called back for the second day, but it was my handler error on my first retrieve that let us down. Alf held himself together and did us proud.
Moral of the story is be honest with yourself and learn from your mistakes. To many supposed trainers out there, who try to tell you a story about their dogs to save face for themselves. It takes a bigger person to accept fault and act upon it.
Anyway we are proud of Alfs performance and will have another go next year, thanks for your support and following us.

As many of you know Jonathan has qualified and ran in the Cocker championship 3 years but this is a first for the springers.
Will keep you all posted over the next few days.
