Letโ€™s talk W***y! Ok so her name is willow but we re-homed two Willows so sheโ€™s called W***y, anyway โ€ฆ

W***y the British Short Hair came to us a broken cat bless her she wouldnโ€™t let me touch her. She had bad experiences. When cats are re-homed as a groomer we do not know their background. What they like what they donโ€™t like and their owners might not either.

So itโ€™s important to ask this question
How long have they been re-homed?
What does the owner know about the catโ€™s history?
Do they let them touch the cat?

As groomers we can then start to build a plan of how we work with the cat, building trust over a period of time.

It took 6 months for W***y to settle, and now after 2 years I can stroke her, she sits on my lap, she likes the other cats and most importantly sheโ€™s a Happy Cat ๐Ÿซถ

We spend so much time working around a cat's face, but how many of us truly understand what whiskers do?

Whiskers (or vibrissae) are not just thicker hairs. They are ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฌ deeply connected to a large follicle packed with ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐›๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฌ. When a whisker bends, touches an object, or detects changes in airflow, that ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ญ'๐ฌ ๐›๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง, helping them interpret their surroundings. ๏ฟผ

โ€ข Detect vibrations and subtle air movement
โ€ข Judge distances and spaces
โ€ข Navigate in low light
โ€ข Improve spatial awareness and orientation
โ€ข Communicate emotions through whisker position ๏ฟผ

As groomers, whiskers can also tell us ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐š ๐œ๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ :
โžก๏ธ Relaxed whiskers = comfortable cat
โžก๏ธ Forward whiskers = curious or alert
โžก๏ธ Whiskers pulled back = stressed, fearful, or uncomfortable

๐Ÿ’ก Did you know?
The facial whiskers aren't the only sensory hairs a cat has. Cats also have specialized sensory hairs above the ๐ž๐ฒ๐ž๐ฌ, on ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ง, on the ๐›๐š๐œ๐ค๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ข๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ฌ (carpal whiskers), and ๐ฌ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ parts of the coat. These all help the cat gather information about its environment and body position. ๏ฟผ

๐ŸŒฑ Whiskers ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ก๐ž๐ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ, just like coat hair.

๐Ÿฑ Some breeds, including the Sphynx and Devon Rex, may have sparse, short, curly, or even missing whiskers as a

๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ฎ๐ž- You may have heard of whisker fatigue, a term used to describe possible stress from repeated stimulation of the whiskers. While still debated, it reminds us how sensitive these structures are and why gentle facial handling matters. ๏ฟผ

๐Ÿพ ๐Š๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ง ๐…๐š๐œ๐ญ
Some mother cats are known to chew or shorten their kittens' whiskers. It's thought this may help discourage adventurous kittens from wandering too far while they're still developing.

๐Ÿ’”๐–๐ก๐ข๐ฌ๐ค๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐‚๐š๐ง ๐๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค ๐“๐จ๐จ
Whiskers naturally shed and regrow, but they can also become broken or worn. A common cause is repeated rubbing against the doors or sides of cat carriers during travel, leaving whiskers looking uneven or shortened.

โœจ As cat groomers, understanding whiskers helps us better understand feline behaviour, stress signals, and handling techniques. They're ๐ง๐จ๐ญ "๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ"โ€”they're an important part of how cats experience the world.
