That’s me, officially out of office for a week! 😌

Sadly, there’s no holiday or trip away involved, but I do have a couple of days out planned 🌊🐴

There are also a couple of trips to the vets with both dogs 🙄😂

And then, at the weekend, Jen and I are off to do some networking, learning and general geeking out at a trainers’ retreat with Jay K9 Mantrailing. 🤓🐾

So… not exactly a holiday, but a week away from the usual routine and I’m taking it! 😎

🐾 Monthly Joint Skills Session – Indications 🐾

This morning Jen and I were back at the maize maze for our monthly joint skills session, and this month we were putting the spotlight firmly on indications.

We had 10 handlers and 11 dogs, with a busy 30 trails run between us! It was a really productive morning, with every team working towards their own individual goals.

For some teams, the focus was on establishing an indication and deciding exactly what criteria we wanted the dog to meet when they had found the trail layer. For others, the indication was already fairly established and we were working on adding duration and finding different ways to proof the behaviour.

A big part of the session was looking at the role of the trail layer. When we’re trying to build a consistent indication, the trail layer can make or break the behaviour. We looked closely at putting the onus on the handler to give their trail layer clear instructions — exactly when to reward, how to reward, what to do if the dog offers the behaviour, and when to simply ignore the dog.

And our trail layers certainly got into the spirit of things! 😂 We had people running on the spot, lying down amongst the maize, standing with their legs up on signs, hiding under tarps and generally being asked to do some increasingly random-looking things! 🤣

A huge thank you to all our very game clients for being willing to go along with whatever we asked and for helping us create different scenarios to test and proof those indications. You’re absolute stars! ⭐️

It was lovely to see improvements in some of the dogs even over the course of the session, and every team finished with a clear plan for how they can continue working on their individual goals and, most importantly, build consistency across future sessions.

And, of course, the maize maze is always a popular venue for our sessions — not just for the training! 😋 With beautiful views towards the Malverns, plus bacon baps, cakes and coffee available from the café, it’s a pretty good place to spend a Sunday morning!

Another busy, productive and very enjoyable session. 🐕‍🦺❤️

🐾 Afternoon mantrailing at Morton Stanley Park 🐾

The afternoon brought warmer weather… and with it, a LOT more people! 😆

With children playing, dogs everywhere, people enjoying the café and plenty of general park activity, there were distractions around every corner. Exactly the sort of environment that gives our teams the opportunity to practise keeping their focus on the trail and trusting their dogs.

We tackled two trails, giving the dogs plenty of opportunity to work through the scent picture, make their own decisions and keep working through whatever the environment presented. And, as always, the handlers’ job was to give them the time and space to do just that.

There were moments of “Are you sure?” from the humans, moments of “I absolutely know where I’m going!” from the dogs… and plenty of teamwork in between! 😂🐕

The warmer conditions and increased activity certainly made for a useful training session, with the teams having to work through a whole host of competing smells and movement.

👏 All of the teams did a fantastic job! They worked hard, trusted their dogs and dealt brilliantly with whatever the park threw at them.

A great afternoon of trailing, learning, problem-solving and, most importantly, happy dogs doing what they love! ❤️👣🐾

Jen has had a busy day, running two mantrailing sessions. Here’s her report from the morning, afternoon group post to follow…

🐾 Saturday morning mantrailing at Morton Stanley Park 🐾

A cooler-than-expected start left the handlers feeling a little chilly 🥶, but everyone soon warmed up once the trailing began!

We worked through three trails:

🔹 Warm-up trail – getting everyone settled and ready to work.
🔹 Trail 2 – scent transfer – handlers took scent from an item belonging to the trail layer using a swab, giving the dogs a different scent article to work from.
🔹 Trail 3 – aged trail – a slightly longer trail with a little more time for the scent to develop and move through the environment.

The park was busy, providing plenty of real-world distractions, from people moving around the park to the children’s play areas and a busy café. Perfect conditions for helping the teams learn to stay focused on the job despite everything else going on around them.

The sun even made an appearance towards the end ☀️, making for a lovely finish to the morning.

And, of course, no Morton Stanley Park session would be complete without the now-traditional café visit! ☕🍰🐾

A great morning of teamwork, problem-solving and watching the dogs work out the puzzle one step at a time! 🐕👣❤️

☀️ Thursday morning trailing at Hampton Ferry 🐾

I was teaching a private session this morning for a lovely group of friends, which is always a pleasure. As is often the case with this particular group, they chose a venue with a café… because apparently mantrailing works up quite an appetite! 😂🥪🍰

The dogs are all at different stages, so after a warm-up for everyone, they each chose what they wanted to work on for the rest of the session.

Throughout the morning, I was keeping the focus on the starts and taking scent — how the scent article is presented, and helping the dogs to understand that taking scent is a valuable part of the game. 👃🐶

🐾 Team Maisie opted to tackle their longest trail to date, which also involved taking the hand ferry across the river! ⛴️ Maisie produced a fabulous trail and gave Mum some lovely, clear negative indications along the way. What a girl! ❤️

🐾 Team Ruby were only on their second session, so we kept things short and confidence-building with some hunting trails. The environment was pretty busy and highly contaminated, but Ruby did a great job of working through it and building her confidence. 🌟

🐾 Team Sidney also opted for some straightforward trails to build his confidence and drive for the game. And what better motivation than his beloved tennis ball… which the trail layer kept running off with! 🎾😂

🐾 Team Zippy chose to work on decoys. On her second trail, she had to pass decoys on the way to her trail layer, and for the final trail we upped the ante with three people sitting together at a picnic bench. After checking out one person, Zippy promptly went around them and gave a beautiful sit indication on the trail layer. 👌🐕💨

🐾 Team Frodo also chose to tackle their longest trail to date — around 650m! He was definitely looking tired towards the end, but he kept on working right through to the finish, and we were all very proud of him. 💪❤️

There was also a little bit of entertainment for the humans when one of our trail layers found herself hiding behind a hedge in an area frequented by dog walkers and joggers. She did have to explain to a passing member of the public that she wasn’t actually squatting down for a wee! 🤣🚽 Thankfully, she lived to tell the tale!

We finished the morning with a lovely group dog walk, giving everyone the chance to have a run around, play and generally enjoy themselves. 🐕🐕🐕

A beautiful setting, happy dogs, good friends, a bit of mantrailing… and, of course, butties and cake afterwards. 🥪🍰

A pretty lovely way to spend a Thursday morning! ❤️🐾

🐾 Tuesday Tea Time Trailing! ☕️👃

Five teams joined me this evening for some Tuesday Tea Time Trailing — and what a lovely group we had! A real mix of dogs working at different levels, all with their own little things to work on. 🐶❤️

All the dogs started with a warm-up trail before we got stuck into the evening’s challenges.

🍪 Treacle
For Treacle’s second trail, we introduced a scent transfer from another person. Our trail layer had rubbed the shoulder of our volunteer, David, who became our “scent article”! 😂 Treacle took scent from David’s shoulder and successfully followed the trail to find her trail layer. 👃➡️🐾

🐕 Meg
Meg was absolutely on top form tonight! Super keen, making lovely decisions and really getting on with the job. For her trail, she took scent from David’s hand — our trail layer had shaken hands with him before heading off, giving Meg a scent transfer to work from. She nailed it! 👏

❤️ Red Dog
Red Dog (Rocky to his friends) was doing his first progression tonight, having completed his introduction a few months ago. So tonight was all about reminding him what the game is about — tune out those environmental distractions, follow the scent and find the trail layer (and, of course, the treat pots waiting at the end! 😋).

🐶 Max
Max did some super trailing tonight. He’s a little less confident when approaching his trail layer, so we adapted his finds to make things easier for him. He could approach and get his reward without even having to make eye contact with his trail layer.
And it worked well — he continued to work happily, made some really good decisions and got to finish his trails feeling successful. ❤️

🐾 Ginny
Ginny had a bit of a slow start, but then showed us that she knew exactly what she was doing as she began making some really clear decisions and following the trail. And this was a great reminder that it’s not all about speed. Sometimes working slowly has its advantages!
Ginny took scent from a road sign and, because she was taking her time and working carefully, she didn’t miss her trail layer hiding in a sneaky little gap in the hedge. 👀🌿 Well done, Ginny!

A lovely evening of trailing, lots of banter and plenty of laughs. 😄 Five teams, five very different dogs, all working at their own level — which is exactly what I love about these sessions.
