Canine Kin I am passionate about helping you and your dog live a more fulfilling life. How can I help you? How can I help your dog? How do I train?

I have over 9 years working with owners and their dogs as well as experience lecturing students at College and University level within the field of Canine Behaviour and Training. I have achieved an Award and Certificate in Education and Training from the City and Guilds as well as completed Building Instructing Skills with the Dogs Trust. I am not only able to help your dog but more importantly, I understand how we learn and can help you to apply what we do in class to the real world. I have worked in rescue for 3 years, training and rehabilitating dogs that present with behaviour concerns and aggression. I enjoy training the more challenging personalities that have been deemed untrainable and thrive on breeds such as huskies, malamutes, mastiffs, and akitas. I take pride in the dogs I have helped throughout my career and still maintain relations with the dogs and their new owners. I have completed Building Training Skills with the Dogs Trust and I am a Certified Shelter Dog Behaviourist with the International Association for Animal Behaviour Consultants. All of the methods I use a compassionate, focusing on developing your dog’s mind to better equip them for success. Holding a Masters by Research and BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour and Welfare the methods that I use are science based, driven by trainers and behaviourists published research to ensure we use the most up to date methods when helping owners with their dogs. My training is not generic. The training you will receive will be flexible enough to meet both of your needs and ensure both you and your dog succeed.

β˜€οΈ Preventing heat-related illness in our pets

With amber and red weather warnings for heat covering much of the UK this week, it’s important to keep our pets as cool as possible.

- Never leave pets in a car or hot room
- Make sure pets have access to a cool, shaded, and well-ventilated area, both indoors and outdoors
- Always provide fresh drinking water
- Walk dogs during cooler times of the day, avoiding walks altogether on very hot days.

Remember - Get your pet wet, then call a vet! Check out our top tips below πŸ‘‡

Virtual Behaviour First Aid Consultation: Β£185

In-Person Behaviour First Aid Consultation: Β£255
Available within approximately one hour of Pershore where suitable.

A little Canine Kin update 🐾

I am very pleased to share that I am now working on Canine Kin full-time.

This means I have more availability to support dogs and their families with kind, practical, welfare-led training and behaviour support.

Canine Kin has always been built around the idea that dogs are family. They are not β€œbeing difficult” on purpose. They are communicating, learning, coping, adapting, and sometimes finding the world harder than we realise.

My role is to help guardians understand what their dog may be experiencing, and to create realistic steps that support both the dog and the people who love them.

I now have increased availability for:

β€’ 1:1 dog support across Worcestershire and surrounding areas
β€’ Virtual support across the UK
β€’ Life skills support
β€’ Confidence-building
β€’ Support with walks, settling, visitors and everyday routines
β€’ Clinical behaviour support through the veterinary referral pathway, where appropriate

Thank you to everyone who has supported Canine Kin so far. Every recommendation, review, message, booking and kind word really does make a difference.

If you would like support with your dog, you can book a short behaviour support call using the link in the first comment, or send me a message through this Page. We can then discuss the most appropriate next step.

We’re expecting some hot weather this week. If it feels warm to you, it’s even hotter for your dog.

Skipping a walk is always the safer choice when it’s too hot. No dog has ever been harmed by missing one, but heatstroke can be deadly.

On lead or off? That is the question πŸ€”

With the good weather and green walks it can be so enjoyable to walk with our dogs off lead. What is stopping us?
πŸ›‘ Your dog is still in training, so recall is not (yet) reliable on walks.
πŸ›‘ You have not received the support needed to learn how to teach a reliable recall that you can safely use on walks.
πŸ›‘ Recall is great at home or on walks when there are no distractions, however, your dog stops responding as soon as there are other dogs or something to chase.

🀨 What can we do if our dogs cannot go off lead? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Though walking our dogs off lead can be a great form of exercise, without recall training it is difficult to demonstrate the control needed to keep everyone safe. What are the alternatives?

Longlines can be a great tool for providing our dogs with the freedom to explore while also providing use with control to step in and help if needed. Training takes time, but you and your dog want to enjoy walks out in nature. To help exercise your dog off lead safely while out in the countryside I recommend using a longline. There are a few types you can try:

Nylon Longline
Great for smaller dogs and puppies.

Lunge Line
Typically used for horses but they are great for medium and larger dogs too! The material is comfortable to hole and is less likely to burn that nylon.

BioThane Longline
These longlines are waterproof and antimicrobial which means that they do not smell! Great for those muddy walks in winter. The added bonus of this material is that they are unlikely to tangle, which makes them great for letting them run along the ground behind our dogs. This is great for keeping your hands free and providing that β€˜off lead’ feeling for our dogs. If you are worried that they are not going to come back, simply step on the longline, pick it up, and reel them in.

🌳 Walks in Nature πŸ•

When we are caring for a dog who is reactive on walks, we need to consider the best places take them that is great for their mental health (and ours too). Some of the joys of walking our dogs in rural areas includes:

POSITIVES 😊
βœ… Enriches our dog’s nose with all the different smells found in nature.
βœ… Inspires our dogs to explore, fuelling their curiosity and encourages them to exercise.
βœ… Allows you and your dog to decompress in nature.

What do you enjoy and find challenging about rural walks with your dogs?

If you are struggling to enjoy walks with your dog in, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Book a free Behaviour Support Call with me to discuss how I can help:

Top Tip: Training Lead

The equipment we are discussing this week is the training lead. This lead has a clip on either end (instead of a loop handle) with a couple of metal rings along the lead. This allows us to attach to our dogs at two-points of attachment. Some of the benefits of using a training lead include:

🐢 I recommend attaching to your dog on their harness and collar. This way if one of the pieces of equipment fails, you are still attached to your dog.

🐢 If your dog is reactive, two-points of attachment makes it a lot easier to steer your dog away from their trigger, moving them away to help calm them down.

🐢 The two-points of attachment also helps to keep your dog close, which can be helpful to help keep your dog safe (e.g., away from the road or trigger).

🐢 You can also switch to a single point on their harness to use the lead as a longline during parts of your walks where there is greater visibility and space. This means on your walks you can easily switch between the longline for giving your dog freedom and two-points of attachment when you need to keep your dog close.

🐢 If your dog pulls then I recommend try getting a harness with a D ring on their chest, connecting one clip to their chest and the other to their collar. Clipping to your dog’s chest means that they are unable to direct their weight and power forwards. This can help to make it a lot easier to hold your dog if they are pulling.

Does your dog pull on their lead or are they reactive on walks? Get in touch to discuss how I can help.
