BLUETONGUE VIRUS OUTBREAK

Given the increase in bluetongue (BTV-3) cases being experienced in Devon and North Cornwall currently, we are reiterating our advise to all keepers of sheep, goats, camelids and breeding stock cattle to consider vaccinating their animals.

As there is no treatment for BTV-3, it poses significant threat to these high-risk stock, with potential impacts on animal health, productivity & trade.

Slowing disease spread through vaccination & restricted movements in our area remains the best defence.

To facilitate this, we are running a vaccine bottle split day for our small holder clients this Wednesday 5th August. Please call the practice today so we can get you booked in.

Also, Martha our Vet tech is on-hand to administer the vaccines for those that need.

Alpaca Mites
We can sometimes come across skin lesions in alpacas that do not get
better with multiple rounds of treatments. Proper diagnosis is always best
before treating! Here is a video of some Chorioptes mites which were
identified after a scrape due to failed treatments - these mites don’t
respond to injectable treatments as they aren’t blood sucking.
If you’re concerned about skin issues in your alpacas or other camelids,
always speak to your vet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
