As we approach firework season we know this can be a worrying time for horse owners, so how can you prepare?

🔊Desensitise your horse with firework recordings starting at a low volume and gradually introduce flashing lights
📍Check what displays are due to happen near to where your horses is stabled
🔥Ensure your yard is safe to reduce risks of fires and ensure you have an up to date fire plan
⚠️Check fences and gates for security and that there are no protruding nails, sharp edges or slippery surfaces that the horse could be injured on
🩺Speak to your vet – some horses who get very upset by fireworks can require sedation or anti-anxiety medications to help them through firework display evenings so have these conversations early to ensure you have what you need ready

Autumn is a great time of year to have your horse, pony or donkey's teeth checked to identify and treat any issues that may cause problems over the winter.

We classically consider dental discomfort with quidding (dropping food), nasal discharge or poor ridden behaviour however signs of dental discomfort can be very subtle. These subtle signs can include gradual weight loss or the horse may become more withdrawn with chronic dental pain. Some horses show no signs at all.

Identifying signs of dental disease early can allow a plan to be put in place. This may include a specific intervention such as extraction of a loose tooth, a plan for increased frequency of treatment such as repeat flushing of diastema (abnormal gaps between teeth) or adjustments to the diet for the winter period.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱?
Sometimes a dental examination reveals a tooth that needs to be removed. Signs such as difficulty eating, abnormal chewing or nasal discharge may indicate a dental problem, although sometimes the issue is only discovered during examination.
Common reasons for extraction include:
🦷Fractured or damaged teeth

🦷Tooth root abscesses

🦷Diseased pulp (the part containing the nerves)

🦷Loose or mobile teeth, particularly in older horses

How straightforward an extraction is depends on the tooth, the underlying disease and how damaged the tooth has become. Some extractions can be surprisingly challenging, particularly when disease has been present for a long time.

X-rays are usually needed to identify the affected tooth and plan the procedure. Most extractions are performed under standing sedation with local anaesthetic nerve blocks.

Afterwards, most horses require only pain relief, such as bute. Antibiotics are not always necessary, particularly when there are no complications. A follow-up examination 1–2 weeks later checks that the extraction site is healing as expected.

The certificates have arrived, and we’ve got some lovely feedback to share…

Our Dalston, Newbiggin and Tarn practices have received their accreditation certificates through the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Practice Standards Scheme 🙌

This means we’ve chosen to be independently assessed against RCVS standards and there’s a lot of work behind those certificates. Each practice underwent a thorough inspection lasting two to three days, checking everything from how we store and manage medicines and stock to our equipment, facilities and health and safety procedures.

And there were some lovely comments about the work happening across our practices:
💚 Dalston
Our welcoming waiting room, wellbeing garden and support for the team all received praise. The assessor also described the practice as “a leading light for the profession” for its sustainability work!
💚 Newbiggin
Our dedicated teams and wide range of services were recognised, with particular praise for the spotless, well-equipped equine facilities and the care taken to protect both patients and staff.
💚 Tarn
The assessor highlighted the great attention to detail in our farm health plans, our clean and tidy premises, and the specialist interest in goats that allows us to support clients from further afield too.

There’s so much work that goes on behind the scenes to care for your animals, so it’s brilliant to see our teams’ efforts recognised.

A big thank you to everyone across all three practices. There's so much to be proud of! 👏
