Foal Friday – A reminder it is now mandatory to passport and microchip your foals. This must be done before they are 6 months of age, or before the end of the calendar year, whichever comes latest.

Last month members of Cumberland Farmers Hunt South Pony Club. visited us to learn more about equine veterinary care as they are working towards their Pony Health and Equine First Aid achievement badges ⛑️

Hamish and Mel talked the children through wound care, vaccinations, bandaging, common ailments requiring veterinary attention, and the signs of a healthy pony🐴

Thank you to WCF Pet & Equestrian for letting us borrow the horse for the occasion, meaning the children had the chance to practice their bandaging skills!

𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐬 🐴

Have you booked your newborn foal check?

Hopefully your mare has foaled successfully, and you have a bright mare and foal. Did you know that we then advise all newborn foals to have a check at around 18-24 hours old?

This check includes an examination of both the mare and foal to assess any for congenital problems or injuries from foaling. We will also assess if the foal requires a tetanus antitoxin and take a blood sample to check the foals IgG. Newborn foals are at risk of not receiving enough antibodies from the mare, either due to low colostrum uptake or poor colostrum quality of the mare. This low antibody level risks them becoming seriously ill with infections.

Do you know the 1-2-3-4 rule for newborn foals and the mare?

The first few hours of the foals life are a critical time period for both the mare and foal to ensure that they both stay healthy.

1. Foals should stand within 1 hour

2. Foals should suck within 2 hours

3. Mares should have cleansed their placenta by 3 hours

4. Foals should pass their meconium within 4 hours

Foals should continue to regularly suck a couple of times an hour and will spend a lot of the time in-between sleeping. If you notice that your foal is not standing without assistance or is not sucking, please call your vet asap for assistance.

Keeping your horse cool in warm weather ☀️

Summer has arrived in Cumbria so now is a great time to recap the best ways to keep your horses cool in this lovely weather:

-Ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water. Floating some apples or carrots (if appropriate for your horse) in a bucket of water can encourage water intake, as well as soaking hay and feeding wet mash feeds. Access to a salt lick allows horses to replace lost salts if they feel deficient.

-Ensure access to shade. Natural shade provided by trees or hedges works well, but consider the use of a field shelter if no natural shade is available.

-Consider ventilation in stables. A large fan, or fans, can be used to increase airflow, but make sure to plug them into a safe socket away from stables where horses can interfere with it.

-Prevent sunburn. Pink muzzles are particularly vulnerable to the sun, but the use of a child safe sunblock can help to reduce the risk.

-Where possible, plan your ride in the morning or evening, avoiding the hottest points of the day.

-If travel is necessary try to do it at the cooler parts of the day, and ensure you have plenty of ventilation in the wagon. Carry plenty of water in case of delays or breakdown.

-Fly masks can help to protect your horses eyes from the flies
