🐴 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 – 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀?

Due to the nature of the disease, testing can be complicated!

First line testing involves measuring ACTH levels in the blood, however these levels can vary seasonally, and the slow progression of the disease means early diagnosis is difficult.

The Care About Cushing's scheme offers free diagnostic testing for PPID during its Spring and Autumn testing periods. It’s a great way for horse owners to save money, as the scheme covers the laboratory fee for diagnostic ACTH testing.

Although ACTH testing is available throughout the year, the current free testing period runs until the end of October, so now is a good time to take advantage of the scheme.

In some cases, ACTH testing may not be suitable, or may not be enough to confirm a diagnosis and your vet may suggest additional tests.

🐴 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴'𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 - 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁?

Equine Cushing’s is the commonly used term for 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗗)— a degenerative condition affecting the pituitary gland in the brain.
As the disease progresses, the normal inhibition of the pituitary gland is lost, resulting in an overproduction of hormones such as ACTH. This can trigger a cascade of effects throughout the body, leading to a range of clinical signs.

What to look out for:
• A long or thick coat, or failure to shed the winter coat
• Increased drinking and urination
• A ‘pot-belly’ appearance
• Muscle wastage and weight loss
• Increased susceptibility to infections, such as recurrent foot abscesses or non-healing wounds
• Laminitis
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite
• Increased sweating

PPID is a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, but we can give medication to reduce the effects. If you’re concerned that your horse may be showing signs of PPID, speak to your vet about testing.

🌿 Equine asthma isn't just a winter problem! 🐴

Did you know that summer can be just as challenging as winter for some horses?
🌼 Pollen and fungal spores in pasture can trigger asthma, leading to signs such as:
🐴 Coughing
💨 Difficulty breathing
🏇 Reduced exercise tolerance
👃 Occasionally, a nasal discharge

Vet Bethan explains the best ways to manage equine asthma:
✅ Stabling during periods of high pollen counts
✅ Using fly masks or nose nets to help filter pollen
✅ Working with your vet to develop a management plan
If medication is needed, treatment aims to reduce inflammation, open the airways, and reduce mucus production.
If your horse has developed a persistent cough or isn't performing as expected, don't ignore the signs—speak to your vet to discuss whether equine asthma could be the cause.

Foal Friday 🐴

Foal IgG tests - what are they and why do we do them?

IgG testing is how we check that a foal has received adequate antibodies from their mum. These antibodies are essential to help the foal fight disease during their early life while they develop their own immune system. We test these antibodies by measuring the level of IgG in the foal's blood within 24hrs of birth. This gives us time to improve antibody levels with colostrum and/or hyperimmune plasma. With our stable-side test kit we can do this on yard while you wait!

Hopefully, you’re all managing to keep comfortable through the warm weather we’ve been having.
We just want to remind you to take care on the hard ground we’re continuing to experience due to the lack of rain — who ever thought we’d say that in Cumbria! 🔅
As always be mindful of the shade available in your fields and ensure your horses always have a supply of fresh clean water to encourage them to keep hydrated. ⛱️💧

👁️ Watery eyes in horses? Don't ignore them! 🐴

During the summer, we often see more horses with watery, sore eyes. Dust, pollen, and flies can all cause irritation, leading to redness, swelling, and discharge.
If your horse has a weepy eye:
💧 Gently bathe it with boiled, then cooled, water.
🚫 Don't add anything to the water unless your vet has advised you to, as this could make the irritation worse.
💊 Treatment may include eye drops and pain relief, but these should only be given under veterinary guidance.
