Not all laminitics are good doers.

When we talk about laminitis, the focus is often on overweight horses and ponies — and rightly so, as obesity and excess calorie intake can be major risk factors. But it’s important to remember that some horses and ponies prone to laminitis still struggle to maintain condition.

For these horses, weight gain needs a careful approach. Rather than simply to add more calories, it’s important to choose the right calories to keep starch and sugar intake low.

Look for feeds that are:
✅ High in fibre
✅ Higher in oil
✅ Moderate to high in quality protein
✅ Low in starch
✅ Low in sugar

Fibre should always be the foundation of the diet, but forage quality matters. Low WSC hay may be more suitable than grass-rich diets for many laminitics, especially those who are insulin dysregulated or at higher risk.

Oil can be a useful source of slow-release calories because it is starch free and energy dense, while quality protein helps to support muscle and topline — particularly in horses who have lost condition.

Grass, on the other hand, can be unpredictable. Depending on the time of year, weather and grazing conditions, it may contribute significant amounts of sugar to the diet. So careful grazing management is so important, even when weight gain is needed.

The key message? Laminitic diets are not one-size-fits-all.
Some horses need calorie control.
Some need support to gain condition.

Regardless they all need a diet which is carefully balanced for their individual risk, body condition and workload.

If your horse or pony is prone to laminitis and you’re not sure how to safely support weight gain, our friendly SPILLERS Care-Line nutrition specialists are here to help.
