In lamb ewes got caught out by the sudden change of weather, just a bit before coming indoors. Lots of concentrate and hay as a bad time to go hungry and all the grass is hidden

Have been too busy to keep up with posting for a bit.

The last of the pigs went the other week which should help a bit, sorry to see them go but the breeding stock have been sold on and are still breeding & keeping the bloodlines going, will hopefully restock at some stage in the future but we were not willing to risk having stock on site we did not have time to look after properly.

The sheep are doing fine and we are looking forward to lambing, hopefully the feeding of the in-lamb ewes in the snow as shown is now finished until next winter.

Time also to start dividing the poultry into breeding groups so that we can collect hatching eggs knowing which cockerels the hens have been running with, so still plenty to do.

Now finished lambing, the Ryelands are a delight to keep with much more vigorous lambs than the previous Charollais, which could not cope with the degree of exposure here. Sadly one ewe had to be destroyed by the Vet, but other than that a good year, every ewe in lamb and no lambs lost.

Lambs now arriving, the Ryelands are coping much better than the previous breed and seem to be a good choice for the con...

Always feels like spring is on the way when livestock is born even though pig breeding is not seasonal.
Last night I was sorting out the heat lamp in the farrowing ark for the sow I thought would give birth soonest, and then went to feed the other sow in an ark in the field to get a bit of a surprise.
I then had to start again setting up the gas heater for that ark as there is no electricity there.
Well worth all the effort when you see the result, here they are this morning about 8 hours old

The lamb born Christmas day is doing well, good going considering how early in the year & the wettest Jan on record, here he is at 1 month old with his mother

Just found this on the web.
A customer who bought 3 weaners last year was enquiring about some more this spring & let me know that a professional photographer friend of his had taken pictures of the 3 he had bought last year and put pictures on his website. I have just checked, there are quite a few pictures and they are well worth a look so have pasted the link below

A friend in a neighbouring village mentioned that he had recently bought 3 Oxford Sandy & Black pigs and thought they had the potential for a good greeting card shot. The March snowfall made for a perfect backdrop for their ginger bodies.

Ryeland lamb born on Christmas Day with his mother

I thought it was time to join the 21st century with the smallholding and so have created a web page at fulshawrarebreeds.co.uk to show what we produce and this page to show what is happening as time passes. I will try to post pictures of what is going on through the year as it happens.

The most recent was a surprise on Christmas Day when we found a lamb running round the field when we went to do the morning feeding. One of the ewes bought in last summer must have already been in lamb when she came as our ram only went in a few weeks before.
