Obviously as the weather was so hot this week was fairly quiet, but it was cooler Friday, so Briar came for a second visit at 12 weeks old, the first time I visited her.
We worked on recall with whistle, learning to sit on a placeboard, and some lead walking, with plenty of breaks in between and chatting about her needs and what to work on. She is a super little dog, who sits beautifully and when you get nearer to her she sits up even straighter as if to say what’s next.

Teagan came for a visit Sunday early morning, we worked on hunting again today, today we didn’t have yes I’ll listen Teagan was had let’s get on with it!! So we had to adapt to her needs, trying to help her owner how to work with each personality we get given. So breaking things down into smaller parts helped, knowing that not every time are we going to get the nice flowing hunting we can get and accept that on this day. We have to learn to read our dogs to help up do this, living with a cocker spaniel is never boring.

Lastly a visit from Tollie who was on great form, we did some hunting with her as well, which she loved. We worked on her manners around dummies as she finds them very exciting. Her delivery is improving, we are not quite at the hand delivery stage but we are not getting running around behind either which is a step forward. She has so much enthusiasm for life that you must be careful not to be too formal before she is ready. We finished with some retrieves and blinds in the same place, she loved this also, considering she has not done much Gundog work she shows lots of promise. Another lovely session today, without getting wet too!!

Next up today was Teagan, who is maturing into a great little dog. As her retrieve pattern is now so much better without the deviation to hunting when unsure, we decided to work on her hunting as it has taken a back step. There is a real art in getting this right it has to flow and work in time and step with your dog, a fast little dog as Teagan is, you need to watch and wait to give her time to properly search each area before you move on, so you are not pushing her on before she has worked the ground, with a few tweaks here and there is was definitely better when we have finished. A great session as always with these two.

Today started off with a home visit to a delightful springer spaniel puppy. Her owner wanted some advice and help with how to get going after not having had a puppy for some time. Little Briar was a sweetie and I think will be a great companion, we talked about lead / collar and harness and what would work best, I am of the opinion that they both have their
place at the beginning, until you get going with life. Also introducing a whistle to get a nice solid recall starting. It all looked to be going in the right direction. I shall look forward to being a part of this young dogs upbringing.

Willow came for some day visits while her owners were away, so I picked her up and brought her home in my car, so first new experience, then she met one of dogs and we had a run around in my field, I took some treats and toys, Willow has taken to not always wanting you to catch her before a walk , but thoroughly enjoys her walks and also not wanting to give toys back, so I sat in the grass with her, letting her come over to me and fussing her but not grabbing her, then asking her to give me whats she’s holding and then giving it back or exchange for something of the same value. She improved during our session and then managed a lovely loose lead walk back up to the house. I was very proud of the walking as it shows her owners have been working on this and that is because of my help. 😊

We went again to somewhere different to practice hunting, retrieving and working around other dogs, three of us whose dogs all get along well and are at much the same level. It is great to have other people to train with who are so keen, my dog maybe weaker at some aspects but stronger in others, I think that maybe even if you are more experienced, your dog may not be or have issues that need time and patience, so not to put pressure on your and your dog, don’t worry if things go wrong re think your approach, timing and make sure you set clear instructions to achieve.

Yesterday we went to another place to train, where there is a pond, so Finn could practice his water retrieves. I took one of my dogs along too, also my new toy that plays sound so we could have shot sounds that weren’t too loud. We took it in turns to work on steadiness which they were both much better at, we talked about how and where to be when they come out so as to get a clean delivery, v important for the test. With a few tweaks it improved. I am lucky as my dog doesn’t feel the need to shake which can induce them to drop the dummy, she is more focused on the next thing, I have put a cue on to her shake also. Finn loves his swimming and did really well. We finished with a retrieve over a log, to warm them up, then introduced the puppy to Puzzle which she was so good about, good for him to meet other dogs. A great session.

Finn and Teagan came for a visit, we practiced our hunting two at a time, and individually, we did some retrieving with shot and without, throwing dummies around that weren’t all for them, generally putting them through their paces, with lots of added distraction, getting them read y for their test. They both did really well. Then the next day we met up again and did similar stuff but in different ground that was more challenging, I also took my springer, they all behaved well and did us proud. It is great to have people to train with again.@
