“It isn’t who they are. It’s what they’ve learned.”
🐾 Teaching a Dog Not to Hog You 🐾
At the beach, this is just another one of those behaviours I work on regularly.
You take your dog out for a lovely walk and before you know it they’re demanding every second of your attention. They climb all over you, jump on your belongings, push between family members, and make it almost impossible to have a conversation with anyone else.
You try to say hello to someone and suddenly your dog is jumping up, pawing at you, nudging you, or dragging you back towards them because they simply can’t cope with not being the centre of attention.
Most people accept this as “just their personality.”
It isn’t.
It’s learned behaviour.
Dogs repeat behaviours that work for them. If demanding attention gets attention, they’ll keep demanding it. If jumping, pawing, nudging and interrupting gets a response, they’ll do it more often.
Over time these behaviours become habits, and eventually owners start believing that’s simply what their dog is like.
But it isn’t who they are.
It’s what they’ve learned.
One of the most important things we can teach our dogs is how to settle, relax and enjoy being part of the family without constantly demanding interaction.
A calm dog isn’t a boring dog.
A calm dog is a dog that has learned self-control, patience and how to switch off.
These are life skills, and just like recall, lead walking and good manners, they can absolutely be taught.
Because so often what people think is “personality” is actually training.
