🇿🇦🐶 Travelling to South Africa with your dog?
South Africa has one of the more detailed pet import processes, so it's important to start planning early.
⏳ We recommend allowing at least 3 months before your planned travel date.
One of the first steps is arranging your import permit, which can take up to 2 months to be issued. For many dogs, neutering is required before the permit can be granted, so it's worth checking this early in the process.
Before travelling, your dog will usually need:
✔️ An ISO-compliant microchip
✔️ A valid rabies vaccination given more than 30 days but less than 12 months before travel
✔️ Blood tests completed within 30 days of export
Unlike some destinations, these blood tests do not include rabies. Instead, they screen for diseases and parasites, including heartworm.
If all blood test results are negative, your Official Veterinarian can complete the final health examination and Export Health Certificate within 10 days of departure.
❤️ Dogs must also travel with a 6-month supply of heartworm medication, and owners are required to continue treatment for 6 months after arriving in South Africa.
