🇨🇳🐾 Travelling to China with your pet?

Good news! Pet travel to China is now much simpler than it used to be ✈️

For most pets travelling from the UK, the requirements include:

✔️ An ISO compliant microchip
✔️ A valid rabies vaccination
✔️ A veterinary health check before travel
✔️ An Export Health Certificate (EHC)

📋 The Export Health Certificate is valid for 14 days from the date it is signed by your veterinarian, so timing is important when planning your journey.

🛂 During the Export Health Certificate appointment, your veterinarian will also need to see the owner's passport, as this information is required to complete the paperwork.

🎉 One of the biggest recent changes is that the previous isolation requirements have been removed for pets travelling under the new Chinese import certificate, making the process much more straightforward for many owners.

📄🐾 What is an Export Health Certificate (EHC)?

An Export Health Certificate (EHC) is an official document completed by an Official Veterinarian (OV) that confirms your pet meets the health requirements to travel from the UK to another country. ✈️

Most countries outside of the UK require an Export Health Certificate before your pet can travel.

✔️ Completed by a UK Official Veterinarian (OV)
✔️ Confirms your pet meets the export requirements for travel
✔️ Usually requires a health check before departure
✔️ Required for many destinations worldwide

⚠️ An Export Health Certificate is not the same as an Animal Health Certificate (AHC).

An Animal Health Certificate is used for pet travel to the EU, whereas an Export Health Certificate is used for many destinations outside of the EU, such as Australia, the USA, UAE, South Africa, China, and more.

⚠️ It's important to remember that an Export Health Certificate confirms your pet meets the export requirements at the time it is issued. Import requirements can change, so it is always important to check the latest rules for your destination country before travel.

These two lovely travellers recently visited us at Dedicated Pet Care Clinic for their final Export Health Certificate appointment before their journey to Australia.

After months of planning, preparation, and meeting Australia's strict import requirements, Jerry and Mabel are now ready for the final step of their relocation journey.

Both were absolute stars during their visit and were more than happy to pose for a photo before heading off on their big adventure. 🐾❤️

🇦🇺🐾 Travelling to Australia with your pet?

Australia has some of the strictest pet import requirements in the world, so early planning is essential ✈️

For pets travelling from the UK, the process usually includes:

✔️ An ISO compliant microchip
✔️ ID Checks completed by OV66 Vets
✔️ Rabies vaccination
✔️ Rabies blood test (RNATT)
✔️ Australian import permit
✔️ Government quarantine booking
✔️ Multiple parasite treatments before travel
✔️ Veterinary health checks and export paperwork

⚠️ Dogs travelling to Australia will also usually require additional blood testing depending on their travel history and import requirements. These may include:

• Leishmania infantum (Leishmaniosis)
• Brucella canis (Brucellosis), if the dog is not desexed
• Leptospira canicola (Leptospirosis), if the dog is not vaccinated against Lepto

🩺 Australia also requires two identity checks completed by two independent vets from different practices. The rabies blood sample can usually be taken at the same time as the second identity check.

⏳ After the rabies blood test is completed, pets must wait at least 180 days before entering Australia, making timing one of the most important parts of the process.

Pets entering Australia from the UK will also usually complete a minimum 10-day quarantine stay in Melbourne on arrival as long as the ID checks have been completed. If not, then a 30 day stay is required.

🩸 Pet Travel Blood Testing 🩸

Did you know that many countries require blood testing as part of the pet travel process? ✈️🐾

The most common test is the Rabies Antibody Titre Test (RNATT), which checks that your pet’s rabies vaccination has provided enough protection for travel requirements.

However, depending on your destination country, additional blood tests may also be required, including tests for:

• Leishmania
• Heartworm
• Brucella
• Ehrlichia
• Lyme Disease
• And more

Many of these tests must be sent to approved external laboratories, and some destinations have strict timelines that must be followed before travel can take place.

Every country has different import requirements, so it’s important to start planning early to avoid delays or unexpected issues with travel paperwork.

🐾✈️ Oscar is Dubai Bound! 🇦🇪

Meet Oscar, the laid-back Labrador who recently visited Dedicated Pet Care Clinic for his Export Health Certificate before his upcoming move to Dubai.

Oscar was so relaxed during his appointment that he actually fell asleep while we carried out his health check! 😴🐶 We think that's about the best review a veterinary clinic can get.

With his travel paperwork completed and everything in place for his journey, Oscar is now one step closer to his new adventure in the UAE. It was a pleasure helping him prepare for his travels, and we're sure he'll settle into Dubai life in no time.

🇪🇺🐾 Travelling to the EU with your pet?

If you’re travelling from the UK to the EU with your dog, cat, or ferret, your pet will require an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) before travel.

✔️ The AHC must be in the language of the first EU country you enter
✔️ Rabies vaccination must be completed at least 21 days before travel
✔️ An Animal Health Certificate can be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV) within 10 days of travel

⚠️ The owner must also:
• Travel within 5 days of the pet
• Attend the appointment to sign the owner declaration confirming the pet is not being sold or rehomed

Some EU countries also require a tapeworm treatment before entry, so it’s always best to check requirements early.

📄 If the owner is not travelling within 5 days of the pet, or if a pet is travelling to a new home abroad, a different certificate is required called a Commercial EU Certificate.
