My little "helper' this week 🫣😂😂

Training aids are not always the tools you think they are 💁‍♀️
When dealing with certain behaviours or trying to teach new ones, we can use a number of things to aid us.🙌🐾

It's not always cheese or E-collar 🙄
It's not a one size fits all treatment..🙌
It's not always positive, force free, balanced, scientific, adverse or even fun. Sometimes it's one session, sometimes it's 10. 💁‍♀️
Sometimes we laugh the entire time and other times I've had clients sobbing in my arms either from feeling like they are failing their pet or from pure relief of seeing results🥺.

It's a rollercoaster 🎢

One thing I will NEVER do is jump on another trainers socials and bash their methods and I WONT post cryptic posts clearly aimed at other trainers tearing down their style of training. If it works for your clients then great.
I've helped many clients from others trainers but I don't post about it or name then. We are all different. I mould to my client and the dog. We work together as a team to get the best results. End of. 🙌🐾

🎆🐾 FIREWORK SEASON IS CREEPING CLOSER… 🐾🎆

The darker nights have already started, and before we know it, fireworks will be starting too! 💥

We had Cooper and Eva on Reactivity work🐶🐕‍🦺
We had big Matt helping out with Fearful Aggression problems 🙌
Of course Jack worked the impulse control cases. 💁‍♀️

I love that he has zero control over his own impulsivity due to his "spicy brain" but give him a dog to work and he's all over that 😂😂

🧠🐾 GUT HEALTH & BEHAVIOUR — WHAT’S THE CONNECTION? 🐾🧠

When we’re looking at behaviour, we shouldn’t just look at what a dog is doing — we should also consider how that dog is feeling.

And that includes what’s happening in the gut. 👀

The gut and brain communicate with each other through what’s known as the gut–brain axis. Digestive discomfort, changes in the gut microbiome and poor gastrointestinal health can all potentially influence a dog’s overall wellbeing — and when a dog doesn’t feel right, their behaviour can change too.

You might notice things such as:

🐾 Increased restlessness or difficulty settling
🐾 Changes in appetite
🐾 Reduced tolerance or becoming more irritable
🐾 Difficulty concentrating during training
🐾 Changes in sleep
🐾 Increased sensitivity or seemingly being more “on edge”

Of course, behaviour changes can have many different causes, and gut health certainly isn’t the explanation for every behavioural problem. Sudden or significant changes should always be discussed with your vet.

But as a behaviourist, I believe it’s important to look at the whole dog — health, nutrition, environment, learning history, stress and emotional wellbeing can all form part of the picture.

🐾 KYLO’S PROGRESS! 🐾

Just look at this boy! 🥹👏

Kylo the Boxer is currently undergoing e-collar training with me, and the progress he’s making is fantastic.

When we started, Kylo had little to no reliable recall and was reactive towards other dogs, which meant giving him freedom in an open environment simply wasn’t a safe option.

Fast forward to this video… 👀

🧠 Checking in and making good choices

And most importantly — calm, controlled and enjoying his freedom.

E-collar training isn't about pressing a button to punish unwanted behaviour. When introduced and conditioned correctly, it's a communication tool used alongside clear guidance, reinforcement and lots of groundwork.

The goal has never been simply to get Kylo "off lead". The goal is to build reliable communication, engagement and recall, so that he can safely enjoy more freedom while still being responsive to his handler.

There’s still work to do, but this is a HUGE step for a dog who previously couldn't safely have this level of freedom. ❤️
