Meet our team:

- Makenzie Ferrier MSc

Makenzie is one of our two founders and current shop manager at The Nature Nook. He has a MSc in Conservation and a passion for all animals, domestic or otherwise. In his free time he is a keen crafter; many of our collars, bandanas and hammocks were made by him! You'll find him behind the counter with Jimbo the Amazon parrot most days a week, probably sharing some food.

- Alex Woods

Alex is the second of our two founders. While she has unfortunately had to step back from the business for the foreseeable future, she was still instrumental in it's birth and helped to make the store what it is today. She currently works at Paignton Zoo as a zookeeper, working in the reptile and amphibian section! She is also an amateur wildlife photographer and total parrot enthusiast. If you pop into our store you'll get to see her two conures in our aviary, Heidi and Rumple!

It has been a difficult month at the Nature Nook. Sales have been down and several big bills are due. In addition, we've had multiple vet visits and more requests to surrender than we can possibly take on.

We're also still recovering from the impact of the extremely difficult year we had last year and gradually trying to get out of arrears in several areas. As a result, we have multiple bills due and only about £40 in our bank account.

So without further ado, here are some of the options we have if you'd like to contribute:

- Our raffles! You can enter these from just £1. We currently have a raffle for a steamdeck, a beautiful wooden rabbit hide, and I'll be launching another switch 2 raffle in time for Christmas! We pay for all of these prizes so we can't draw them until we reach the threshold to be able to pay for them

- My terrible pet portraits! Black and white versions are 2.50 and color ones are 4.50

- Pre-order an advent calendar or a Christmas box ready for pick-up or delivery in November

Donations can be made via PayPal: [email protected]

via bank transfer:

Or through our website!

We're going to be making some small pet advent calendars.

Planning to have a few available at the shop but just wanted to get a better idea or interest so I know how many to make!

Sadly our little man Gary is back at the vet tomorrow. He's a little wobbly on his feet so I suspect whatever issue he was treated for last time may unfortunately be recurring.

He's a very strong little guy so I have faith that he'll get through it! Please send him good wishes for his appointment 🤞

After a suggestion over on Instagram, I've revamped our very rarely used patreon page for anyone who would like to give a small monthly donation to support our work.

There is now a tier for each of our permanent resident animals which will help to pay for their care, including Smaug and Gollum (our blind pig) who will likely be staying here or moving into a permanent foster home.

Quite a big request- is anyone willing to volunteer to help cover the shop on Saturday?

It will involve:
- Using a simple till system
- Serving customers
- Feeding and watering the animals

I'll be attending an event but we could really do with a good sales day after two very quiet weeks!

What's a pet care hack you wish you'd discovered sooner? 🤔
