Heading on a staycation with your dog this summer?☀️

Dr Tom Evans, Partner at Medivet St Helens and Medivet Prescot, shares everything you need to know, from travel tips, to hot weather and swim safety 🐶

🔥 HEAT STROKE 🔥

Now the weather is warming up, cases of heat stroke are unfortunately becoming more common.

Did you know it can only take 15 minutes for dogs to become fatally Ill from heat stroke?

A normal dogs body temperature is roughly 38.5°C , it only takes a 2 °C increase in body temperature for heat stroke to set in.

Some dogs are more at risk of getting heat stroke, such as:

☀️ Short nosed dogs (Pugs, Frenchies, Bulldogs)
☀️ Elderly and young dogs
☀️ long haired breeds
☀️ Overweight dogs

However during the hotter temperatures (28 degrees and higher) heat stroke is a risk to all types of dogs

What are the signs of heat stroke?

🚫 Heavy panting, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst
🚫 Bright red tongue and gums, which can sometimes appear Grey in serious cases as this is when shock sets in
🚫 Excessive drooling, vomiting and/or diarrhoea
🚫 Lethargy, unsteadiness or staggering
🚫 Collapse or seizures

How can we prevent our beloved pets from getting heat stroke?

✅ Provide lots of shade and cool areas
✅ Plenty of access to fresh water, multiple bowls in various areas are beneficial
✅ Avoid walking dogs in the middle of the day where the temperature is at it’s highest, walking at the beginning or the end of the day is best, before 8am or after 8pm, your dogs won’t mind a missed walk either. Keep to areas with plenty of shade.
✅ Avoid pavements where possible, If you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for longer than 3 seconds then it is too hot for your pets paws🐾
✅Not keeping your dogs in hot cars.

Most of the above will also apply to cats too, they are usually very good at keeping themselves cool but it is always beneficial to help them where we can. 🐱

If you think your pet has heatstroke, please call us immediately and we can help you 🏥

It’s really important that we keep ourselves and our pets safe during this time, and also helps the vets from having emergencies that could be prevented 🐾 ❤️

Our building is fully air conditioned and kept cool inside with access to water for pets, but we understand if appointments need to be rescheduled or cancelled during this time whilst it is so hot.

🐾 Iggy’s success story 🐾

Iggy, a wonderful guide dog, came to see our vet Farid in January after suddenly developing several swollen lumps. During the consultation, Farid performed needle biopsies which were sent to the laboratory for analysis.

The results unfortunately showed that Iggy had lymphoma — an aggressive cancer of the lymph nodes which can have a prognosis of only a few weeks if left untreated. Thankfully, recent advances in veterinary medicine mean that this condition can often be treated with chemotherapy.

Iggy now visits us every week for blood tests and chemotherapy treatment. After completing his first five weeks of treatment, Iggy is back to his lively self! His lymph nodes have returned to normal, and we’re delighted to say he is now in remission. 💙

Here you can see Iggy patiently waiting for his treats while our nurse Sophie administers his chemotherapy. He has been the bravest patient and always brings smiles to the team.

Iggy’s story is a great reminder to always check any lumps and bumps you find on your pet. If you’re ever worried, it’s always best to book a consultation and have them checked by your vet.

We see just as many cats as we do dogs — although persuading a cat to pose for a photo is definitely more of a challenge! 🤭

Willow and Jake enjoyed a fuss from everyone when they visited!

Willow had her booster vaccinations and Jake has his interim health check. Both of which are included in our Medivet healthcare plan, so there was nothing to pay on the day as all the costs are spread out over a monthly direct debit!
