We've introduced a self check in system at our reception desk to make your visit even smoother! 📋

Our friendly receptionists are always here to help but if you notice them on the phone when you arrive feel free to simply use the self check in screen, pop yourself down in the waiting area, and the vet will call you and your pet through when the vet is ready to see you.

It's a small change designed to save you time and keep things running smoothly for everyone. 🐶🐱

☀️ When the weather heats up ☀️ It's not just our dogs and cats that need a little extra care, our rabbits do too.

One of the biggest summer dangers is flystrike, a fast-acting and potentially fatal condition where flies lay eggs on soiled fur, and the resulting maggots can cause devastating injuries in just a matter of hours. Rabbits that are older, overweight, long-haired, or unable to groom themselves are especially at risk, but any rabbit can be affected.

The good news is that flystrike is largely preventable. Daily health checks, keeping your rabbit clean and dry, and making sure they have a cool, well-ventilated living space can make all the difference.

If you notice any signs of flystrike or think something isn't right, don't wait, contact your vet immediately. Acting quickly could save your rabbit's life. 🐰🐇

We are now looking to expand our Board of Trustees and are seeking passionate, committed individuals who would like to use their skills, experience and enthusiasm to help shape the future of our charity. 💚

Our trustees play a vital role in helping guide OWR, providing good governance, strategic direction and support as we continue to develop our work — including our exciting plans for a dedicated new wildlife hospital.

🚨 FRAUD ALERT – PLEASE BE AWARE 🚨

We want to make pet owners aware of a recent phone scam involving missing and found pets in the area.

We have received reports that scammers are contacting owners and impersonating veterinary staff, claiming that their missing pet has been found, or is receiving treatment. They then ask the owner to make a payment over the phone or to follow a third party link for veterinary treatment or other costs.
Yesterday, we had the unfortunate news that Iffley Vets had also been impersonated. Scammers have gone as far as to include AI generated photos of missing pets in veterinary settings. These images can be frighteningly convincing, as missing pet posters are being used to copy recognisable features, such as fur patterns and markings. We would never pressure owners for payment of veterinary treatment for missing pets over the phone.

⚠️ Please be cautious if you receive an unexpected call or message like this ⚠️

If you receive a call about your missing pet, please remember:

• Do not give out any personal, bank account, or card information

• Ask for the veterinary practice’s name, location and contact details

• End the call and contact the practice directly using a trusted phone number to verify the information

• If your pet is missing, be especially careful with calls claiming to have found them

• If you believe you have been targeted by a scam, report it to the Police and your bank immediately if you have made a payment

Please share this post to help spread awareness and protect other pet owners from falling victim to these scams. 🐾

"🤔 What do I do with injured wildlife?" is a question we get asked more often than you'd think!

🦔 Although we are a small companion animal vets, we regularly get calls from members of the public wanting advice for injured or unwell animals that are found out and about.

🦇 Whilst we do try our best to help every animal that comes through our doors, we are not wildlife specialists, and we do not have facilities to rehabilitate or treat long-term. We might not be experts but we can offer limited advice, which will usually involve contacting a wildlife rescue.

🦉 For example, last week we had a call about a tawny owl that was found unable to fly. From the phone call, we were able to confirm that help was needed, and that the owl was able to be transported to us safely. Once examined by the vet, it was discovered the owl had a broken wing. We were able to get in touch with a local rescue centre who were happy to take on treatment and care for its injuries.

🦌 If you suspect a wild animal needs medical assistance, please seek advice from a wildlife rescue first, and they can best assess whether veterinary intervention is needed.

Abscess warning! ⚠️ This post contains a photo of a small open wound that some may find gross (or satisfying, we don't judge 🙈).

One of our nurses' cats, Ripley, came in to Wheatley last week to treat a painful abscess that had developed on the side of her face after fighting with a neighbourhood cat....ouch! 🤕

Injuries and bites from cat fights often become infected and can form pus-filled abscesses, which are quite sore and require draining.

After clipping, draining, and cleaning the abscess, Ripley was far more comfortable and happy. 😊 A pain-relief and an antibiotic injection were given to make sure the wound heals nicely.

You may also recognise Ripley from our brand-new posters in the Iffley practice entrance! She doesn't seem bothered by her new-found fame though... 😆
