Did you know…most pet care services aren’t regulated?
Yes, you heard that right. As of right now, there is no regulation around things such as dog walking, dog sitting or other popular day to day pet services. But one of the only areas that is regulated and requires licensing is home boarding.

Home boarding isn’t the same as pet sitting. The two things some times get confused. And it’s not always easy for pet owners to know what they are looking for when looking for care whilst they’re away.

Home boarding is taking your dog (or dogs!) to the home of a pet care provider who is going to care for your dogs in their own home.

This is the only area of “pet sitting services” that requires strict checks, proper protocols, and importantly a legal requirement in the form of a licence.

Typically, in this area, if you’re looking to send your dog to a home boarder, you’ll be looking at roughly somewhere between £30-£40 per day for one dog. This may vary depending on provider but that’s the average for a good standard home-from-home boarder. Some of the more high end, luxury boarders may be priced more like £50-£60 per day. But that’s the general expectations of what you should be looking to pay for your dog.
Definitely wouldn’t be expecting to pay anywhere in the region of anything like £120 a day - I’d expect a mansion with individual doggy pools and their own butlers for that much.

There seems to be a lot of confusion online right now as to what is considered dog day care, dog home boarding and dog sitting (or overnight sitting)

If someone is coming into your home for the evening and staying overnight, this does not require a licence. Also, overnight pet sitters may charge more than a dog boarder as they are working away from home, they’re working unsocial hours and they’re having to account for their travel. Overnight pet sitters staying in your home generally charge somewhere in the region of £60-£80 per night.

I thought I would shed some light on the differences and requirements of the two services.

I cannot stress enough the importance of doing your research beforehand and making sure your dog is in the best hands.

Pet Sitting vs Home Boarding vs Dog Daycare

I've recently had lots of enquiries about Home Boarding and Dog Daycare. While these are fantastic services, they're not something I currently offer, so I thought I'd explain the differences.

Pet Sitting:
🐶 A professional comes to stay in YOUR home while you're away.
🐶 Your pet stays in their familiar environment, keeping their normal routine.
🐶 Great for pets who are happiest at home or for multi-pet households.
🐶 Pet sitting in the owner's home does not require an Animal Activity Licence.

Home Boarding:
🐶 Your dog stays in the boarder's home, often as part of their family.
🐶 Home boarders must hold a valid Animal Activity Licence issued by their local council.
🐶 Licensed providers are inspected to ensure they meet animal welfare standards.

Dog Daycare:
🐶 Your dog spends the day at a licensed daycare facility or the provider's home and returns home with you later that day.
🐶 Daycare providers must also hold a valid Animal Activity Licence.
🐶 A great option for dogs who enjoy socialising, playtime and company while you're at work or out for the day.

Every dog is different, so all need something different when it comes to care, so do your research, make sure to visit the premises and for dogs that are happiest staying in their own homes and keeping their usual routines, that’s where my pet sitting services come in!

🐾 A challenging week last week! But we made it. And the main thing - all my Diddy Dogs were doing exactly what they needed to be doing; resting, relaxing, taking it easy and not over exerting themselves in the heat, staying cool in the shade and most importantly keeping safe! 💙😌

🐾Home visits, indoor play time, garden time for quick sniffs and wee wees, cooling mats, fans, big drinks & lots of water replens! 💦 we made it through! 💪

🐾Thank you to all my clients for being brilliant and understanding of the changes that needed to occur last week due to the unprecedented weather.

🐾Thankfully (and my goodness am I glad) we will have some relief this week from the crazy highs of 30+ degrees, and it’s looking much cooler. Although the following week it currently looks like it’s creeping back up to high 20s and 30s again 🫣🙈

🐾Walks will resume as normal this week and we’ll be back to out about on our adventures. However I will be keeping a close eye on those temperatures and monitoring any changes 👀

⚠️ I will be *cancelling* all walks that are scheduled for late morning, lunchtimes and afternoon times all this week ⚠️
If you are happy to have a short *very* early morning walk instead, please let me know. Even around 8am, the humidity is high 🥵
I will be popping in for home visits instead of a walk for any pups that would normally have a walk. As always in these temperatures, *priority will be for any dogs home alone.*
If you’re going to be at home with your pup and would usually have a walk, please could you let me know.

⚠️ As always, it is worth reminding ourselves that our dogs need extra care and consideration as we enter into high temperatures. Some breeds are much more susceptible to struggling in the heat (and humidity), even at the lower end of the warmer temperatures, but any dog can feel a little uncomfortable in the heat in their furry coats!

Here are just a few tips for keeping your pups cool and safe in warmer weather:
☀️ Provide a shaded area in the home. Keep blinds or curtains closed.
☀️ Make sure fresh water is always available and topped up regularly. Potentially put extra water bowls down in other areas of your home.
☀️ Paddling pools, sprinklers and hoses! 💦
☀️ Frozen Kongs or lickimats filled with peanut butter (make sure it’s doggy safe) , yoghurt or banana make great doggy lollies! And provide mental stimulation 🧠
☀️ Cooling mats or wet/damp towels to pop down on the floor for your pups to lie on. You can also get cooling vests and bandanas.
☀️ Only walk your dog when the temperature is much, much cooler. Either first thing early in the morning, or late in the evening 🌙
☀️ Where possible, if it’s not too hot, take your dog to shaded areas such as woodlands, places with lots of tree cover, and places with access to water 🌳🏞️
If you can, try to avoid pavements and get straight onto grass (if possible)
☀️ Reduce normal walk times and go for short, sniffy walks instead 👃 These are great for mental stimulation 🧠
☀️ If the weather is hot throughout the majority of the day, and is still too warm in the evening, don’t risk walking your dog. Mental stimulation with toys and brain games can tire your dog out!
