A customer’s dog recently had 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝. What started as a lump above his eye and in his jaw was initially thought to be an autoimmune issue. After things continued to worsen, a CT scan at The Willows revealed the horrifying cause.
He was operated on that same day, and they found two grass seeds — one in his eye and one in the top of his head, which had caused a huge abscess that had tracked all the way down to his jaw and was trying to eat through the bone.
Thankfully, he received the major surgery he needed, but it has been an incredibly serious ordeal.
What makes this even more frightening is that his owners 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐬. It just shows that even the most vigilant owners can be caught out by these horrid little seeds.
After walks, especially through long grass, please check your dog carefully — particularly around their 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬, 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, 𝐩𝐚𝐰𝐬, 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐟𝐮𝐫
If your dog is squinting, has a red or weeping eye, shaking their head, excessively licking a paw or showing unexplained discomfort, please contact your vet promptly.
