BLUETONGUE VACCINATION
Bluetongue virus is really taking a hold in the south west of England and working up the west coast - there is already a confirmed case in Lancashire. As of 3rd August there have been 81 confirmed cases in England since 1st July and it sounds like this is going to massively rise, quickly. There is a significant time lag on reporting test results as it is taking 2 weeks to get samples processed and results available and only 3 animals per farm can be tested free of charge by APHA.
Information from farms and vets down south are saying it is spreading extremely quickly, with large numbers of sheep and cattle affected, with serious clinical signs and a significant number of deaths (particularly sheep). Please can everyone who hasn't vaccinated within the last 12 months seriously consider vaccinating. I realise it is a hassle and an expense, but I can't see how we are going to avoid getting it and I really would like to limit the impact on everyone. Livestock can not infect each other directly, but it is spread easily by midges - peaking in September last year.
It is looking as serious as we feared - symptoms include:
- most commonly a raised temperature
- swollen, ulcerated and sore muzzles, lips, tongues, mouths and teats
- nasal discharge & drooling
- lameness, shifting between feet with no apparent cause, perhaps swollen coronary bands above the hoof
- abortions, stillbirths and deformities - which might not be apparent until months down the line
- bloody scour
- sudden death (particularly sheep)
- tups and older stock seem to be the more commonly affected
As it is a virus there is no cure, only supportive treatment. Vaccination does not claim to be 100% effective but can, and has shown to, significantly help.
Bluetongue is a notifiable disease so please contact us or APHA if you believe you are seeing clinical signs.
Briefly vaccination consists of 1 dose in sheep, 2 in cattle 3 weeks apart at a cost of roughly £3 + vat per dose. Availability is ok ish at the moment but we are expecting some delays due to demand.
PLEASE contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss vaccination further.
