We started with a case of the teenage crazies, but actually once out of the gate teamwork mode kicked in. Because I patiently made sure we established calm and connection before setting off. We had a beautiful walk.

What did we do? I let Daisy use her genetics, do what her breed is made for. Mixed in some obedience practice. Finished with steady sniffs and a stroll through town to wind down with a bee rescue on the way. The fact she could wait patiently whilst I picked up a bee and placed it on some elderflower shows how far she's come.

Within five minutes of chatting on drop off, she was ready for a snooze.

This is what walks should look like, especially for adolescent dogs. Clarity, fulfilment, calm, then rest.

I'll post more tips on making sure you don't bring a wired, overtired monster back from walks, so make sure you're following for more.

Changes like this are amazing to be part of.

Don't let anyone tell you heavy management and tip toeing around them is the only way to live with a dog that guards space, objects, food and you.

Yes, management is part of what's needed. But there's a bigger picture and change is possible.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with young dogs is comparing them to others, especially previous dogs theyโ€™ve owned or seen online.

Every puppy is an individual.

Even within the same litter, each dog matures mentally, emotionally, and physically at a different pace.

Some puppies show confidence and drive very early, while others take more time to develop and truly come into themselves.

That does not make one โ€œbetterโ€ than the other.

As breeders and handlers, itโ€™s important to understand that development is not a race.

Pushing a young dog too hard too early, expecting them to hit unrealistic training milestones, or constantly comparing them to older, more mature dogs can do far more harm than good.

The strongest dogs are often built through patience.

Allowing a puppy time to mature naturally, gain confidence through positive experiences, and develop without unnecessary pressure creates a far more stable and balanced adult dog in the long run.

Good trainers recognise what the dog in front of them needs, not what another dog achieved at the same age.

Some dogs peak early, some much later, but every dog deserves the opportunity to develop at its own pace.

Trust the process.

Build the dog and donโ€™t rush. ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿพ

Otley and North Leeds pet owners- please read!

With temperatures set to rise this week I'm making some changes to keep your pets safe ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Shortened walks, steadiness training, rebooked behaviour consultations.

The heat can be really dangerous for our dogs and I will never put bookings before their safety. I also do this for me, I am not good in the heat at all, have a senior dog to keep cool, and won't be pushing through.

If your appointment is affected I will be in touch, but please feel free to message me with any questions at all.

Stay cool, stay safe, and please remember, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them ๐Ÿพ

You might be surprised by what you don't have to live with...

So often I see patterns and habits so normalised people feel there is no way out and this is just life now with their dog.

I'm here to tell you it may not be easy, there will be changes to make within yourself to create change in your dog, but a better life is possible with consistency and a plan that works.

I'm not saying you have to have a dog that will go anywhere and everywhere (that's a post for another day...)

But you don't have to have a life of hiding away from the world and avoiding everything. If anyone ever tries to tell you that's what your dog needs...stop listening.

My goal is to prepare you and your dog for the real world as a team, and give your confidence back.

One common mistake that can make things harder...

Relying on food, when you actually need calm and chill from your dog.

Many dogs become trapped in anticipation and can't relax when food is on tap, and they need to settle down. Demand barking, fidgeting, whining. They're all signs of a dog that doesn't understand how to truly relax, and why they're not being rewarded fast enough.

If this sounds like your dog, it's time to rethink using food in this situation. Yes there will be some frustration, but once they get through that, you see calm and genuine settling. Their whole body changes.

I take all my clients through detailed boredom/place training now and the results are huge. The skill translates to so many parts of life!

Try this today!

Starting a walk as you mean to go on is essential. Expectations of calm and connection are not 'mean' or a waste of time, they are a gift to you and your dog.

By doing this, your dog will learn to look to you, not drag you out of the door!

You can still have fun together by playing and training, but in the right context and in the right space as part of the walk.

I guide all my clients on how to structure their walks so training happens in their routine, not as a big extra task in their already busy lives.
