Getting your dog truly off-lead is by far the biggest thing you can do to fix just about EVERY behaviour problem.

Dogs who get to go off and explore, move freely, run properly, really follow their incredible noses, and just be a dog, are just way less likely to be reactive, anxious, overly clingy, pull on the lead, have separation anxiety, bark excessively or demand attention constantly.

If nothing else, with an off lead dog, when you walk a mile, they’ll probably walk 2 or 3!

If you feel like you’ve tried everything, but did not prioritise true off lead freedom, this is your sign to start.

Dogs are reactive typically for one of two reasons.

1. Fear - They are scared of the other dog/person and know that by barking/lunging they are likely to be safe because either the dog will leave, or their owner will pull them out of the situation. Either way the behaviour works because they get the space they wanted and feel like they kept themselves safe!

2. Frustration - They want to play with/investigate the other dog/person, and when the lead stops them, they become incredibly frustrated by the restraint, and fight against it, and because of the rush of adrenaline that it causes, they also get extremely vocal. This often appears aggressive, but it’s more of a tantrum than anger towards the person/dog.

Tug is NOT going to make your dog aggressive.

That myth has been floating around for years, and all it's actually done is stop thousands of dogs getting a game that's brilliant for them. The amount of clients that I’ve had who’ve been told never to do it because it creates aggression is bonkers.)

Tug builds engagement, it builds focus, it teaches your dog to work WITH you, and it burns off a stupid amount of mental and physical energy in a short space of time. It's basically a pressure valve.

It’s also the only you can teach your dog to think/make good choices when the adrenaline is flowing, which helps massively with reactive dogs!

So instead, people avoid it "just in case," and the dog is left with all that drive and energy having nowhere to go. Guess what happens then? Frustration, barking, jumping, reactivity, the exact stuff people were trying to avoid in the first place.

Rules and structure matter (out/drop on cue, you start and end the game, not the dog), but the game itself isn't the problem. Lack of structure is.

Give your dog an outlet. Teach them the rules. Watch the "aggression" that never actually existed disappear along with the pent up energy.
