Horse owners across England are being invited to take part in a new study that will help researchers identify the best ways to monitor antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in healthy horses.

Some owners still ask for antibiotics to be supplied without a veterinary examination, but in line with current RCVS guidance, vets must complete a physical examination before prescribing antibiotics. This is in no small part because AMR is recognised as one of the world’s most significant public health threats. It occurs when bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics which can make infections difficult, or even impossible, to treat. Antibiotic resistant bacteria can also be found in healthy animals without causing disease, meaning animals can act as reservoirs of resistance that may spread to other animals or people.

Horse owners (and those responsible for horses, such as trainers) across England can get involved in this VMD funded study being run at the University of Liverpool by collecting a faecal sample from their own horse(s) and posting it back to the laboratory. Around 300 strangles outbreaks are reported in the UK each year- and that’s just the ones we know about! As a practice based within Dartmoor national park, we know strangles is always on the doorstep (the map below for the last 12 months shows Devon as a clear hotspot for outbreaks!) so this is something we want all our clients to be mindful of 🦠

Young, old, performance horse, or companion - no horse is immune to strangles, and an outbreak can affect every horse on a yard. Stay alert, help your horses stay safe.

💡Learn how to protect your horses:

☣ Good Biosecurity - at home and at events/gatherings. Strangles spreads via:
➡️Direct contact
➡️Equipment & people
➡️Water & surfaces
🔬 Isolation/testing - this is especially important when bringing in new horses from a high-risk environment
💉 Use vaccination to your advantage - prevention is far cheaper than the testing and treatment costs associated with an outbreak!

Please contact us with any questions about the Strangvac vaccine, for advice on biosecurity and isolation protocols if bringing in new horses to your yard, and with any concerns for your horses health. Remember, 10% of horses which have strangles become carriers, and if untreated they can spread the disease unnoticed until it is too late!

🐴 SEPTEMBER ROUND-UP 🐴

Last month was a busy one for Stringer Equine, check through the pictures to see just a snippet of what we've been up to!

Looking forward to October - We're expecting to start updating Strangvac boosters after last years amnesty campaign, and are continuing free diagnostic vouchers for PPID (cushing's) testing until the end of the month. We will also be at Bicton College for the ABWE Regional competition on October 3rd so look out for us if you will be attending ☺️

Eek, its feeling a little autumnal 🍁🍂 and seeing as all of the summer show dates have been and gone, it must be time to announce the answers to our 'guess the weight' competition!!!

We had some interesting guesses, and some very very accurate ones! With the weighbridge reading being 4️⃣0️⃣7⃣ kg ⚖!

We are currently checking through the tie-break answers and will be contacting our winners later this week, so keep an eye on your emails if you think you were close!

It was a HOT day at Oke Show yesterday, but lovely to see clients and friends. Next up is Chagford on Thursday 20th! This will be the last chance to enter our weighbridge visit competition, and we will absolutely be using those tie-breakers as we have had some excellent guesses so far!

We will then announce the much-anticipated answer, and contact our winners 🏆
