Puppy socialisation is about so much more than meeting dogs 🐾
When we talk about puppy socialisation, it’s easy to think it means introducing your puppy to as many dogs as possible.
But good socialisation is about helping your puppy learn that the world is safe, predictable and worth exploring — at a pace they can cope with.
It’s not about overwhelming them, flooding them with new experiences, or expecting them to “get used to it”. If a puppy becomes frightened, overloaded or shuts down, we’re not creating a positive learning experience.
Instead, we want to gently expose puppies to a variety of sights, sounds, environments, people and experiences while carefully watching their body language and keeping things within a level they can comfortably manage.
And socialisation isn’t just about exposure — reinforcement matters too. We want to teach our puppies what behaviours work in these situations. Teaching skills such as settle, checking in with us, calmly observing the environment and making good choices gives them behaviours they can rely on when the world around them is busy or unfamiliar.
Cooper the Weimaraner is a lovely example. On his day trip to Leeds, he had a positive experience travelling on the train, exploring a new environment and then practising his settle in a quiet pub. 🐶🚆🍻
These experiences, introduced thoughtfully and at a level he could cope with, help build confidence and resilience without asking too much of him.
Because a puppy who is gently exposed to the world in the right way is much more likely to grow into a dog who can offer the behaviours we actually want to see.
Socialisation isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing it well, thoughtfully and at the right pace for your puppy. ❤️
