🚨 XL BULLY CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION UPDATE 🚨

Defra has today, 1 October 2026, introduced a new service allowing owners of dogs with an XL Bully Certificate of Exemption to apply to withdraw the certificate if they no longer believe their dog meets the XL Bully type definition.

⚠️ IMPORTANT THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE WITHDRAWING

It is the owner’s responsibility to determine whether their dog meets the XL Bully type definition. Defra will not make this decision for individual dogs.

Owners should use the official XL Bully conformation standard when making their assessment.

If you are unsure whether your dog is an XL Bully, Defra advises taking a precautionary approach:

👉 DO NOT withdraw your Certificate of Exemption.
👉 Continue to comply with the conditions for exempted dogs.

Once a Certificate of Exemption has been withdrawn, it cannot be reinstated and you cannot apply for a replacement.

There are also serious consequences if a certificate is withdrawn and the dog is later found to be an XL Bully. You could be committing a criminal offence, your dog may be seized, and you may have to go through the courts to keep your dog.

So, if you're considering withdrawing your certificate, make sure you fully understand the conformation standard and are confident your dog does not meet the XL Bully definition.

📌 This is an important update for anyone currently keeping a dog under an XL Bully Certificate of Exemption.

Do your research. Don't make a decision based purely on appearance, breed name or what someone tells you online.

PROOFING DAY FOR ALFIE 🐕

We’ve been working with Alfie and his owner for the past few months, focusing on getting him confidently off lead while remaining neutral around other dogs.

Alfie is a very prey-driven dog and has bolted a couple of times in the past to chase prey. Because of this, we implemented the use of an e-collar as part of his training.

Fast forward a few months and Alfie is now off lead! 👏

Today was all about proofing that training — adding distractions, working around other dogs and making sure the training holds up in real-world environments.

The goal was never simply to have Alfie running around off lead. It was about giving him the freedom to enjoy being off lead while having the reliability and communication needed to keep him safe.

There’s still more proofing to do, but the progress Alfie and his owner have made over the past few months has been brilliant.

Brad Pitt’s new film Heart of the Beast is out… and I can already see what’s coming.

Before getting any dog, you should be doing years of research but especially before buying a working-line GSD.

I can guarantee that 6–12 months from now, my inbox will be full of people asking for help with their reactive, over-driven, out-of-control GSD because they bought the dog without really understanding what they were getting into.

A working-line GSD isn’t a film prop.

It’s genetics, drive, energy, temperament, training, structure and management — and they need an owner who understands how to channel all of that.

Please don’t choose a dog because you’ve seen one look incredible on the big screen.

Research the breed. Research the lines. Research the breeder. Research what you're actually taking on.

And most importantly…

Please don’t be one of those people messaging me 6 months down the line because the dog you bought wasn’t what you expected.

EXPOSURE DAY FOR MATILDA 🐕

Matilda is currently working through our CHAOS TO CALM course and has been with us for the past 3 weeks.

When she came to us, she was very reactive and nervous in busy environments. Today was another exposure day in town, putting her training into practice in a real-world environment.

She is by no means finished with her rehabilitation, but she is well on her way. Progress takes time, consistency and the right tools.

A big part of our courses is giving owners the knowledge and tools they need to continue that progress once their time with us comes to an end.

Lola has officially completed her CHAOS TO CALM COURSE 👏🐾

And what a transformation.

Lola’s owners have been an absolute dog trainer’s dream. From day one, they were given the training programme, took everything on board and just got to work.

No excuses. No cutting corners. Just consistency, commitment and putting in the reps between every session.
