Bluetongue virus is hitting the South West farmers badly. As of the 31st July there have been 92 confirmed cases since 1st July in England BUT please understand that there is a 2 week wait to confirm results due to the sheer number of samples being sent in from suspected cases. Suspected cases jumped to 596 last week from 115 the previous week. The confirmed case number isn’t a measure of the true number of infected animals either as we are only authorised to blood sample up to 3 animals per farm and most farms are seeing a high percentage of animals affected and deaths too. Farms who haven’t vaccinated are seeing much sicker animals and associated losses than the farms that have vaccinated this season.
Sheep seem to be having more severe clinical signs than the cattle at the moment and a case was seen in a llama too.
Symptoms include snotty noses, swollen muzzles with or without crusting, lethargy, high temperatures, lameness, breathing problems, reddening of teats in cattle.
Vaccination is key to reducing the severity of the disease and preventing losses. For those of you that have not vaccinated then we would advise that you do so. Sheep need just one dose of vaccine. Cattle goats and camelids are a booster dose if they had a course last year or two doses 3 weeks apart if new starters.
If a small number of doses are needed then we will be organising further days where we share bottles out. We have doses available this Friday to share.
Bluetongue is a notifiable disease and must be reported if suspected. There are no farm movement restrictions if cases are confirmed, or compulsory slaughter of infected animals.
Please contact the practice for any further guidance or to discuss vaccination.
