His most important job today was not to work.

It’s been a busy week for 15-month-old Charlie. After beginning his Shot Over Training on Partridge, today he joined on a busy shoot.

But Charlie wasn’t there to pick every bird.

His job was to observe, remain steady and, when the opportunity arose, collect the occasional straightforward retrieve.

As the guns waited for partridge, pheasants flew over Charlie’s head—and he simply sat and watched.

For a young dog with drive, that restraint is every bit as important as the retrieve itself.

A valuable day of learning what happens on a real shoot, without being asked to do too much too soon.

Sometimes progress is measured by what the dog does. Today, it was measured by what Charlie chose not to do.

A New Chapter for Volucris

I’m pleased to announce that I am now a Primary Assessor for The Royal Kennel Club Working Gundog Certificate.

This means Volucris can now host more KC Working Gundog Certificate days for both Spaniels and Retrievers, giving more handlers the opportunity to train towards—and demonstrate—the practical skills expected of a working gundog.

It’s another important step in our continued development as a specialist working gundog training company, supporting dogs and handlers from their earliest foundations through to recognised working standards.

Training for the field. Working towards recognised standards.

Charlie’s warm game training continues.

This time, a delayed back-wind memory retrieve on the edge of the sugar beet—asking him to remember the area, trust the cast and use the wind to locate the partridge.

Another step in his development from training to trial.

One Cast. One Clean Retrieve.

Field Trial prospect Cola continuing her warm-game training on partridge.

Sent once, she finds the bird and returns directly, delivering it quickly and efficiently to hand.

No unnecessary handling. No wasted movement. Just a clean, purposeful retrieve—the standard we continue to build as part of Cola’s Field Trial preparation.

Bird found. Retrieve completed.
Job done.

The Ground Is Part of the Training

Open grass can show you what a dog already knows.

But working through woodland, game cover, sugar beet, maize, water and changing terrain reveals what that training is really built on.

Every part of our Thoresby Estate grounds presents a different question.

Will the dog stay connected in cover?
Remain steady around game?
Take direction when the ground becomes difficult?
Keep working when the retrieve is no longer straightforward?

We don’t use the ground simply as a backdrop.

We use it to develop the dogs that will one day be expected to work across it.

The Finished Product? Not Even Close.

This week, Charlie successfully completed his first warm game retrieves.

At just 15 months old, he has shown his steadiness, marking, hunting and retrieving ability. To some, he may already look like the finished product.

He isn’t.

We shared Charlie’s first video when he was just eight weeks old. Since then, every session, every experience and every carefully introduced challenge has added another piece to his development.

He has come a very long way — but there is still a very long way to go.

The foundations are there. The ability is emerging. Now his experience, confidence and consistency must continue to grow.

Waiting for His Name.

The video begins with the bird already falling—and 15-month-old Charlie waiting patiently for permission to retrieve.

Only when sent on name does he move.

Charlie completes the retrieve, but with the bird’s wing falling across his eyes, he becomes momentarily confused and heads towards the gun. One additional recall is all he needs to turn and bring the bird back.

It wasn’t completely polished, but it was another valuable piece of real shot-over experience.

Steadiness, patience, a retrieve on name—and a small problem successfully overcome.

Another bird retrieved. Another lesson learned.

1st September. A New Chapter Begins.

Today, on the opening day of the Partridge Season, Charlie began his Shot Over Training on our Thoresby shooting grounds.

The video captures a significant first: a Partridge falls, Charlie is sent on name and completes his first warm game retrieve confidently — on one cast and delivered to hand.

From steadiness and marking to shot, game and the retrieve itself, months of carefully layered training came together in one moment.

He still has much to learn, but today Charlie took another important step from training dog to working gundog.

One shot. One cast. His first warm game retrieve.

The journey to the Trials continues.

Training for the Field - Not the Park

In a very crowded Dog Training Market, we have deliberately stepped away from general Gundog Training.

We now specialise exclusively in working spaniels and retrievers — developing the control, confidence and ability they need for genuine work in the field.

Because owning a working breed and training a dog to work are not the same thing.

Working dogs. Working ground. Real field experience.

We train for the field, not the park.
