Paw & Nose Prints — Little Pieces to Treasure 🐾

At Gentle Journey UK, we understand that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest moments a family can face. While we cannot take away the pain of losing such a cherished companion, we can help preserve the little things that made them so special.

One of my favourite things about my beloved dog, Frankie, was her Grinch-like toes. I have countless photographs of her feet because, to me, they were just one of those wonderfully unique things that made her, her.

When I lost Frankie, the crematorium kindly made a clay imprint of her foot for me. It is something I treasure deeply. Being able to hold that little impression of her paw is incredibly special — a physical reminder of a part of her that I loved so much.

Looking back, though, I realised I hadn't thought to make ink paw prints while I still had the opportunity. And that experience has stayed with me.

It is one of the reasons that, at Gentle Journey, we offer paw and nose prints as part of every visit. These simple little impressions can become incredibly precious keepsakes — a tiny part of your pet that you can hold onto long after they have gone.

The prints can be made during our visit and left with you, so you have something tangible to keep close to your heart. For families choosing cremation, we can also arrange for paw and nose prints to be made at the crematorium.

We also offer clay paw prints, lovingly created from your pet's paw. These unfortunately cannot be done at home, but we offer them for all the pets we are taking to the crematorium. Just like the clay impression of Frankie's little foot, these can become something truly treasured — a lasting impression of the companion who meant so much to you.

Because when the house feels quieter and you find yourself missing them, sometimes it is the smallest things that bring the greatest comfort.

Love doesn't end when life does.

We have been deeply saddened by the recent news surrounding a pet funeral and cremation service that has let down so many families and, in doing so, has damaged the trust within our industry. Our hearts go out to everyone affected.

Understandably, this has led to many families reaching out to ask about the crematoriums we work with and seeking reassurance about the care their beloved pets receive. I wanted to take a moment to explain why we have chosen the wonderful independent crematoriums we work alongside, and hopefully offer some peace of mind.

To explain, I'd like to take you back a few years.

When I lost my beloved Frankie, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: I couldn't bear the thought of her being placed in a bag and stored in a freezer while waiting for collection. Please don't misunderstand me—this is the standard process used by most veterinary practices, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Most veterinary clinics work with larger corporate crematoriums that collect pets once or twice a week, so appropriate storage is necessary.

For me, though, in that moment of overwhelming grief, I simply couldn't cope with leaving Frankie that way.

Instead, I took her to Forget Me Nott pet crematorium. They showed me such incredible kindness. They recognised that I wasn't emotionally able to speak, so they communicated with me entirely by text message, making everything as gentle as possible.

Frankie stayed in her own bed, surrounded by her blankets and favourite ball, and she was cremated exactly as she lay. I had her ashes back the very next day. She had previously had a hip replacement, and they even returned her metal implant to me, something I hadn't expected but was incredibly grateful for.

Along with her ashes, I received a beautiful clay paw print and a lock of her rich red fur—treasures I will always cherish.

Gentle Journey was born from losing Frankie.

The experience of saying goodbye in the veterinary clinic made me realise how much I wanted every family to have a gentler, more personal option. I wanted every pet to receive the same love, dignity, and respect after death that Frankie received.

That is why we personally transport pets to the crematorium and bring them safely home afterwards.

If it were simply about making money, we would partner with larger, faceless, corporate crematoriums, and have pets collected weekly. But that has never been what this business is about.

Gentle Journey exists because we believe that love doesn't end when life does.

Instead, we have built relationships with small, independent, family-run crematoriums that share those same values. We have access to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I know the teams personally. I have seen the care they give every pet entrusted to them, and I know that every family is treated with the compassion they deserve.

Most pets remain in their own beds or wrapped lovingly in their blankets throughout their journey.

We work with several crematoriums, largely depending on where your home visit takes place. We always try to keep your pet's final journey as short as possible while also supporting trusted local businesses. Occasionally, we may choose a particular crematorium because they are able to return your pet's ashes more quickly if that is important to your family.

Every crematorium we work with is completely open and transparent. Families are welcome to take their pets there themselves if they wish, collect ashes in person, or even visit the facilities. They have nothing to hide. Their premises are beautiful, clean, peaceful, and exceptionally well cared for.

Most importantly, I would trust every single one of them with my own beloved pets.

Behavioural Euthanasia

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about some of the harder, less talked-about parts of loving and caring for dogs. One of those is something called behavioural euthanasia — a deeply emotional and complex decision that some owners and professionals face when a dog’s behaviour poses serious safety or welfare concerns.
This isn’t something anyone ever considers lightly. It often comes after a long journey of training, management, seeking professional help, and trying every reasonable option to give a dog a safe and happy life. For some families, despite all their love and effort, they reach a point where they have to make an incredibly difficult decision in the interest of safety and quality of life — for both the dog and the people around them.
I wanted to open up this conversation with kindness and without judgment. Behind every situation like this is a person who cares deeply, and a dog who has been loved.

“I wish he would just pass in his sleep.”

I cannot tell you how often we hear families utter these words.
As you watch your beloved pet grow older or become increasingly unwell, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. The thought of more treatments, more vet visits, or putting them through another procedure can feel unbearable. Alongside that, comes the deep pain and guilt of knowing you may have to make a heartbreaking decision.

Choosing a day, telling the family, making arrangements—it can all feel too much.

So many people hope that the decision will be taken out of their hands. That their pet might simply slip away peacefully in their sleep, without pain or distress, and without leaving them the burden of that final choice to be made.

Sadly, nature isn’t always so gentle. The process of dying can often be prolonged, uncomfortable, and even frightening—exactly what we wish to protect our pets from.

A peaceful passing, however, is what we can give them.
Going to sleep peacefully, is exactly what we give them with home euthanasia. Your pet can go to sleep calmly and comfortably, in familiar surroundings, with the people who love them most. There is no stress, no fear—just a gentle, final rest.
We believe that choosing to help your pet pass peacefully, when they are struggling, is one of the kindest and most selfless decisions you can make. Taking on that pain and responsibility yourself means they don’t have to suffer. It is, truly, the greatest gift of love.
