Gayle Hallowell may already have imaged your horse.

Their heart. Their eyes. Their abdomen. Their stomach.

But did you know she does so much more with a camera?

Alongside her work as a veterinary specialist, Gayle has recently completed an MA in Photography, developing her creative practice alongside a career spent looking closely, interpreting images and seeing things others might miss.

This weekend she opens her first solo exhibition, The Intimate Life of Trees, in Arnold. Nottingham

Gayle has a long list of accolades as a veterinary specialist, and increasingly as a photographer too. This is an opportunity to experience a very different side of her work and the creativity that usually happens away from the clinic.

The Intimate Life of Trees opens this weekend and runs until 24 October.

Weekdays: 9amโ€“6pm
Saturdays: 9amโ€“4pm

If you are nearby, do go along and support Gayle. We are very proud to see another side of one of our team on show.

Be prepared to be challenged about the concept of a photograph - we have been!

Perhaps the Mediterranean has had it right all along.

When temperatures climb, the middle of the day is often best reserved for shade, rest and a slower pace, with activity returning in the cooler hours of the morning and evening.

The same principle applies to our horses.

If your horse is due to see us, particularly for a cardiac assessment or a procedure that may require sedation, you are always welcome to ask for an early morning or evening appointment where possible. Cooler conditions are often more comfortable for horses and can be clinically advantageous when the cardiovascular system is already working harder to cope with the heat.

Not every visit can be moved, and many procedures can still be carried out safely during warm weather. But where we have flexibility, weโ€™re very happy to work around the weather.

If you have any concerns about an upcoming visit during this hot spell, just give us a call. Sometimes the best clinical decision is simply choosing a cooler time of day.

No horse overheated generated this image.

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our team, but today marks a particularly special announcement.

Gayle Hallowell has been shortlisted for the inaugural ๐—›๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฒ

Many people might assume this recognition is for her exceptional clinical work, or for her contributions to teaching and research.

In fact, it is for something quite different.

The Hogarth Prize is a new UK award for emerging and established artists, celebrating traditional techniques, original thinking and William Hogarthโ€™s rebellious ideals of invention and challenge.

Around 80 artists have been shortlisted, with their work exhibited at Hogarthโ€™s House in London from 28 July to 6 September.

Those of us who know Gayle will recognise that this spirit extends well beyond her artwork. Whether in clinical practice, education, research or art, she approaches everything with originality, curiosity and craftsmanship.

We think โ€œ๐“‡๐‘’๐’ท๐‘’๐“๐“๐’พ๐‘œ๐“Š๐“ˆ ๐’พ๐“ƒ๐“‹๐‘’๐“ƒ๐“‰๐’พ๐‘œ๐“ƒโ€ captures Gayleโ€™s ethos perfectly.

Congratulations, Gayle. We are immensely proud of you.

Surprised to be posting this again.

30 years after the Atlanta games. And even longer since Dr David Marlin published what remains the most valuable understanding of equestrian sport in high heat and high humidity.

I still hear of professionals in the industryโ€™s having such poor understanding of the science.

This week has been hot, I have been distracted by air quality. But heat kills.

During COVID, citizen science revealed that loss of smell and taste matteredโ€”because large-scale observation exposed patterns.

In equine medicine, what patterns are we missing in ๐Ÿดheadshaking a devastating disease that have seen a massive spike this year.

So over the last 2 weeks weโ€™ve built VetTrigger (yes ourselves). Owners log signs; we align them with environmental data derived from the Met Office, NASA and more. Data from where the horse is when it happens.

Right here, right now.

Because Zoe showed us these approaches make a difference. To the individual and to the population.

Vets: Would this add value, would it be valuable (billable when clients select a consult)

Owners: do you want this level of understanding?

Help us make it better with comments below - it also does sweet itch, skin and respiratory diseases and uveitis tracking.

๐ŸดDoes your horse headshake in spring?
๐ŸฆŸScratch and rub through summer?
โ˜€๏ธSuffer flare-ups of uveitis, skin disease, or airways problems that seem to come and go with the seasons?

๐Ÿ€Pollen, UV, midges, air quality may be involved but which, and how much?

During the pandemic, the Zoe app asked people to log their symptoms daily. By linking that data to location, it revealed patterns no clinical trial could have captured.

vetTrigger does the same thing for your horse.

Every time you log how your horse is doing, the app captures hyperlocal environmental data for your exact location. Over time, your horseโ€™s individual trigger profile takes shape. You get insight. Your vet gets evidence. Horses get better care.

Launching soon for Beta testers exclusively for .vet_equine clients

Recently we talked about how headshaking is often exacerbated by more than one thing.

For some horses it may be pollen.
For others, weather.
For others, UV exposure.

And sometimes it may be several factors together.

That got us thinkingโ€ฆWhat if owners could track when their horse struggled and compare it with what was happening in the environment at that time?

So weโ€™ve been building VetTrigger.

A new project developed entirely in-house by our own team at MedicineVet Equine Referrals.

Designed around the questions horse owners ask us every spring:

๐ŸŒณ Was it the trees?

๐ŸŒพ Has the grass changed?

๐ŸŒฟ Could weeds be contributing?

โ˜€๏ธ Is sunlight playing a role?

๐ŸŒฆ Did the weather change?

VetTrigger will help owners record clinical signs alongside environmental information to help build a clearer picture over time. Data that will help your horse, citizen science to collect triggers across the country

Initially, preview access will be available exclusively to our own clients at no cost while we explore and refine the system together.

Huge congratulations to , who has passed her MA in Photography with distinction.

When Gayle first talked about doing an MA, we all assumed her love of animals and wildlife would shape her work. Then one of her tutors gave her some very direct advice:

โ€œYou arenโ€™t David Attenborough. Move on.โ€

And what brilliant advice that turned out to be.

Gayle still provides exceptional specialist veterinary care, but her photography has developed into something much more thoughtful and original. It has changed how she observes, frames, interprets, and communicates what she sees.

For someone whose clinical work already depends on imaging, pattern recognition, and attention to fine detail, that matters.

We are incredibly proud of Gayle, not just for the distinction, but for the curiosity, discipline, and originality behind it.

Congratulations, Gayle. A brilliant achievement.

And if you havenโ€™t seen her work yet, visit her website. It is genuinely worth a look.
