I’m going to be blunt here 🙈

You could be being boring without realising! I often see people asking their dogs to sit all the time, wait for absolutely everything without any real true reward.

Sits are sooooo boring for your dog.

Instead. Think about what they were bred for. Hunting, digging, chasing! Do these things together, otherwise your dachshund will just do their thing and do it without you.

I never thought I’d end up here, but here we are

I always knew I wanted to work with dogs, but didn’t know how. It wasn’t until I had reactivity challenges with Milo I found my path. And my path is to help other dachshund owners.

The one thing I learnt along the way was dachshunds need training which works with their natural instincts. Whereas a lot of training works against them and causes frustration (for owner and dog).

That’s why I’ve created The Calm Dachshund Club. A platform for owners struggling with reactivity. To help you understand why your dog is behaving the way they are, but most importantly training games to help you overcome reactivity.

Stop caring what other people think

It was my birthday on Saturday and my friend thought it would be great to dress me up like a n*b on our hike! At first I was like ffs what are people going to think! But noone actually cares as much as you think they do. Did I get some funny looks? Yep. Are they going to be thinking about me for their whole day NO! I’d be the only one letting others peoples thoughts control my emotions.

One funny comment from someone was “omg I thought I was hallucinating and saw a fairy eating pasta” at that point I’d forgotten I even looked like a n*b! 😂😂

Anyway, moral of the story. Stop caring what other people think. They only see a short snippet of you and your dog’s life. Their reactions aren’t their whole personality

I was in your position before I became a dog trainer. I was looking for advice online. I’d try and implement lots of things and nothing was working. On reflection I was implementing things which wasn’t even relevant or suitable for my dachshund.

The fourth slide I seriously never thought he’d be able to do with my dachshund 🌭

Before if people were moving slow it caused a lot of unpredictability for him, which led to him barking. I’m not using any cues or treats here. He knows to engage with me in these kind of situations now.

Before he would be super barky at other dogs coming to greet him. He could get snappy too. But now he will calmly greet dogs and we just move on. This was an added bonus for us as I was never bothered about him having “doggy friends”. I just wanted him to feel safe around them.

Oh my gosh this is the best 🥹 Before he would be restless, couldn’t settle. Bark at anyone coming into his space and god forbid the waiting staff delivered food/drinks! 🙈

Our world is huge now. He’s a resilient dog now and doesnt perceive everything a threat now.

You don’t have to accept your dachshund is always going to be reactive. Your world can be bigger. You just need the right skills.

How your goals can determine your success with your reactive dachshund

So when my client told me his goal, it made me smile.

If your dachshund can get overwhelmed or fearful of other dogs. Your goal shouldn’t be for them to have “friends” and force them to interact.

They need to feel safe and more comfortable.

That’s not me saying your reactive dog isn’t capable of interacting with other dogs btw. This is something which is dependent on each dog.

Milo used to get overwhelmed by people and dogs. I see it as a bonus that he will now greet dogs calmly and can manage his arousal levels. But that was never my goal. It happened naturally. No pressure.

Things nobody tells you about walking a reactive dachshund.

That you’re constantly scanning the environment looking for the next dog to come in sight.

That the “he’s friendly” will make your stomach drop every time.

That you’ll hide behind cars to avoid a reaction.

You’ll freeze the moment you see a dog out of pure panic.

This isn’t what I mean by scent work btw

Im not talking about scatter feeds or snuffles mats. I’m talking about teaching your dog to search for a scent. Scent work which engages the brain and allows the dog to trouble shoot.

This is Bonnie. She’s a rescue pup and she didn’t have the easiest start to life, so during our last session we implemented scent work.

We’re taking it slow with Bonnie and just working on making her feel safe.

Scent work will help Bonnie:
🐾 Build her confidence

🐾 Build relationship with her new family

🐾 Give her breed outlets (she’s a pointer)

She’s amazing and very lucky to have a loving family who want the absolute best for her ❤️

I’m not going to apologise for

training through kindness and not punishment. A dog doesn’t deserve to be punished for having emotions. It’s our job to communicate how we want them to live in this world with us and make them feel safe.

Not punishing them for having emotions and basically being a dog.
