Why is leaving your dog with food in your Separation Anxiety Training not working?

➡️ This may just distract your dog and once the food has gone your dog then becomes distressed. Therefore, it does not give you a true baseline of how long your dog can cope for home alone. Therefore, no learning has taken place. In addition to this the order of events is wrong! If we want to change how our dog feels about something by pairing it with something good, the food should be presented after what we are exposing them to e.g you leave and the food is then presented! We can’t do this in Separation Anxiety Training unless you post treats through the letterbox😆… not recommended!!

➡️Some dogs won’t even eat the food due to becoming anxious home alone and ignore the food altogether!

➡️The food could become a pre departure cue if paired with being home alone if they are unhappy home alone. Therefore, your dog becomes anxious at the sight of that food toy as it predicts your about to leave

Separation Anxiety Training should look pretty boring!!

But it’s not always as easy as it looks! Training needs to be structured and you need to learn some key skills to help your dog to relax home alone! So what should you be doing?

➡️ Suspending abscences - This is key to your dog overcoming separation anxiety! If your leaving your dog for times they cannot cope with the behaviour is never going improve!

➡️ Learn your dogs body language - it’s important that you keep your dog below threshold during any training so they learn that being alone is safe! So you need to learn the subtle signs your dog is uncomfortable so you return in good time!

➡️ Structured training - you just have training that goes at your dogs pace no one else’s! The training is slow and it’s should be broken down into small stages! We often see people go to fast!

When working through your Separation Anxiety Training there are particular times of day to avoid if you want success in your training! Every dog differs in what works for them but some very common scenarios that may not be best to train around ⬇️⬇️⬇️

➡️ If your dog is due a walk - For some dogs they might be in a routine with their walks and if you train near to these times you may have a dog that is unsettled due to them usually having their walk which could increase frustration and anxiety. So avoid these times if this will be the case for your dog. Not every dog will need a walk before training necessarily but their needs ideally need to be met in some way for success! Every dog differs and you need to work out what works for your dog

➡️ if your dog is don’t be fed - You don’t want to be leaving your dog at a time they are due their food! Again this could cause more unsettled behaviours alone. If you’re working towards longer durations that may end up being closer to food time you can monitor this, but avoid starting a session right before they are due a meal! We all would struggle to learn if we was hungry!

➡️ Of your dog has just wok up from a long nap - the high chance is if your dog has been sleeping a long while and rearing to go and you try to do their training you may not get as much success! We need your dog as relaxed as possible for training

➡️ Training near stressful events - If your dog has had stressful events they may well be less likely to do well in training due to trigger stacking of stress so be mindful of this and set your dog up for success around these times by giving them days off and monitoring stressors that may affect training.

🚪Doors are now open to our 12 Week online transformation programme where you can learn HOW to help your dog overcome Separation Anxiety! Just 5 days left to join!

Three common mistakes I see made when trying to build up your dogs home alone time⬇️⬇️⬇️

1️⃣ You try to train when your dog is not ready to settle or under conditions that don’t set them up for success. For example, a time of day they dont do well at or when their needs have not been met. You need to track data and figure out what works for your dog. It doesn’t matter if the time of day you are training them in the early stages isn’t times of day you may leave them in the future, you can generalise the behaviour later!

2️⃣ You don’t build the solid foundations. I see many of the time owners leaving the house in training far to soon when they have not worked on the basic building blocks such as desensitising your dog to the door you are leaving from. This is a crucial part of the training! Obtaining a proper baseline assessment of your dog can help you work out exactly where your dog needs to start!

3️⃣ Your not training consistently enough! Training does require patience and consistency. There will be variation along the way and it can be really easy to give up. But consistency is key!
