It’s easy to dismiss those clipper twitches as your dog simply being ticklish or even itchy, but sometimes, the body is giving us useful information.
In some cases, it can simply be a normal reflex or response to the vibration of the clippers, but if the response is repeated, localised, stronger on one side, or accompanied by tension, avoidance, licking, changes in posture or other signs of discomfort, it’s worth paying attention. 🚨
The skin, fascia and underlying muscles are supplied with sensory nerves. Fascia wraps around muscles, connects with surrounding tissue and can become damaged or affected by inflammation and injury which can demonstrate as a sensitive to touch, movement and pressure.
🕵🏼♀️ A clipper reaction is a clue, not a diagnosis!
But if a dog consistently reacts to touch or grooming as though it’s painful, particularly if the sensitivity is new or worsening, an assessment by your vet is important to rule out an underlying source of pain.
And as groomers, capturing these responses on video and documenting any changes can be incredibly useful, and a great way of contributing to a vet’s overall assessment.
Pay attention to the small things…
They can make a big difference. ♥️
