Super proud of assistance dog in training Bryson and his human- they've been working on walking with a dropped lead in public, which is a requirement for his future assistance dog qualification, and he has made huge progress with this skill. 👏👏 And displaying lovely happy, confident and relaxed body language with it.

Whilst assistance dogs work primarily onlead, it is important they can work with a dropped lead or off-lead should the need arise, such as if the lead is dropped by accident, it needs to be removed or dropped for safety (for example, if there is a risk keeping it attached when navigating a very tight area with a wheelchair) or due to disability related factors (such as if a handler has a change in consciousness, awareness or functioning related to their health that means they drop the lead) without any change in their focus and behaviour compared to being on-lead, which is why this skill is assessed. 🐕‍🦺

At class this week we introduced sh*t stays! 💩Quite simply, practice your dog's stay whilst you take their p**p bag to the bin on park walks.

Strong stays are a skill a lot of people want, but aren't particularly motivated to train- they aren't the most exciting skill in the world! By building training into daily walks with a reliable cue to you to practice it (each time your dog p**ps with a bin in sight), it's an easy way to regularly practise stays, build different distractions, and get rid of your p**p bags, without taking any extra time out your day.

Here Ocean got a successful rep of an approximately 90 second stay, with long distance and the distraction of me going slightly out of sight behind the slope, without me having to take any extra time out my day just to practice his stay.

Just make sure to have trained a basic stay first and build your distance, duration and the distraction levels gradually! You might start right next to the bin, rather than 50m away!

Happy international dog day 🐾 Although that's everyday for us! 🤣

Hearing assistance dog in training Bryson smashed his stay practice in his most recent session, even with high distractions including shoppers calling to him, and the temptation of fake grass to wriggle on and footballs to play with. ⚽ He was sat so still he looked like part of the display!

Introducing our new format for online 1:1 training!

Across the years, we've noticed that a huge barrier for many disabled and chronically ill dog owners doing 1:1s is the 1 hour long training session....

For many owners balancing pain, fatigue, low energy levels and brain fog, 60 minutes can be just too much to get the most out of the full session time, even when owners are already choosing online training to better accommodate their health.

And many dogs are tired by the 45 minute mark too!

Earlier this year, I trialled out a new session format, and it's been such a success, I'm changing our online 1:1 packages!

Subscription 1:1 Zoom packages are now based off 30 minutes Zoom sessions, allowing clients to have the same 1:1 time in a package, but split into shorter, more frequent, sessions, to better balance health and training, whilst still achieving training goals.

(Longer sessions are still available on request!)

If you're a dog owner living with disability or chronic illness, and/or you are neurodivergent, and are interested in our Zoom 1:1 training, get in touch!

Our Life Skills and Obedience class is moving to The Paw Project in September on Fridays 7:45pm!

Incorporating the Royal Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme and APDT Good Companion Awards, this class provides fun training focusing on skills for real life, from lead walking to impulse control to cooperative care. This is a mixed ability class, giving less experienced dogs the chance to train around more established dogs, and established dogs the chance to proof around distractions.
