My aim is to explore the n

atural needs of dogs and their owners, and using that to explore healthy and productive ways of restoring balance; not only in terms of the human-canine relationship, but in terms of the life they so deserve to enjoy together. Together, we owe it to our best friends to create an environment for them, and us, in which we can thrive. Partnership work takes time, commitment, understanding, honesty, accountability openness, and effort from us humans. Our dogs rely on that from us; they are part of us; they observe and learn from us. We cannot communicate with dogs in exactly the same way we communicate with other human beings, but there are many synergies in the way we do communicate:

- authenticity
- positivity
- empathy
- motivation
- confidence
- consideration
- observation
- awareness
- listening
- understanding
- actions
- body language
- consistency
- tone of voice
- environment
- resources
- empowerment

The list goes on...

Our aim is not to simply 'fix' or manage behaviours, it is to look at the root cause of issues and address those; effecting change from the inside out. It is a great example of the importance of this strategy. Think of something that makes you angry, or frustrated... there will be a trigger for that reaction, which requires you to manage that emotion and regulate yourself. You might find that really hard to do, even as an adult. We can manage that on the surface by avoiding certain situations, or by taking ourselves away from it when it happens; by doing something different in the moment i.e. Although this is useful for reducing our exposure and reactions to the issue, it doesn't address the root cause of our reaction to the trigger. We need to look at the triggers and consider the 'why?' to really achieve harmony again. There are differences between dog 'training', 'behaviour management' and 'behaviour change'. All are valid and useful, but in the appropriate circumstances and based on what we hope the outcomes will be.

- we can train a dog to perform certain tasks or tricks
- we can manage a dog's behaviour in particular situations
- we can address triggers/causes to sustain positive behavioural change

I enjoy all these elements of canine behaviour; my passion is most ignited by working to achieve sustained behaviour change in dogs and owners to achieve a more harmonious and balanced relationship using a creative and relevant approach that works for the individuals involved. I am hugely motivated by empowering individuals with the knowledge and confidence to flourish where their own sparks are ignited. A lot of this is about creating the right environment for learning and evolving, and building confidence and awareness for both the dog and their canine and human companions. I believe the key is to listen to both dogs and their owners; to explore various elements of the partnership(s), as well as looking at historical circumstances and aims for the future, to implement positive, tailored strategies to overcome the obstacles. It is important that we look at the 'whole' situation, and that I can help build confidence for you and your dog(s) along the way. A little more about me:

Recognised for my authentic, creative, and intuitive approach to engaging with learners, project partners, and communities, I have had great success in bringing about positive changes, transforming learning environments, and boosting outcomes for children in and out of school. I tailor my approach according to needs and work closely with the responsible adults to achieve consistency for change within the family unit and educational setting. I am a great lover of animals and nature, particularly dogs and horses where I have huge passion. Mother Nature is my favourite teacher and she plays an integral role in my approach to teaching and learning. I am always striving to improve my skills and knowledge base through everyone I interact with, and through my experiences; as well as undertaking training to equip me further on my ventures. My goal is to use my experience, passion, and wisdom to inspire people and their animals; to facilitate improved outcomes for them. I am committed to empowering humans and their best canine companions; helping them to flourish in their partnership, and restore the balance and harmony that dogs and their owners deserve to enjoy. Clover 😍 20 weeks old; she hasn't see me over the summer and was beyond excited at our little get together today, settling immediately on my foot, and sitting in between my legs.

This little Lancashire Heeler is a package of pure joy. She still has some growing to do; she'll possibly be close to Corgi size when she's fully grown.

She's learning basic commands beautifully and I will have the pleasure of visiting her for interaction and little walks a couple of times per week now schools are back.

Thank you Jeanette Sandall for asking me to be part of your journey. We're going to have the most wonderful time together!! ❤️🐾🥰

"Come middle."

Dexter has learned to 'come middle' with me. He knows that the cue, "Come middle" means come and sit in the space between my legs and look up at me.

This is a great way to distract your dog and help them to feel secure and safe in situations when you're out and about and they may otherwise feel overwhelmed by a situation, or you just need to wait a moment e.g traffic passing, etc. If you can encourage them to come middle in the opposite direction away from the trigger, that is ideal as it takes focus off that and settles it on you.

This training started at home where there was no other stress or triggers for Dexter, followed by random requests for "come middle" while out on walks and there were no other triggers; Dexter learned that there is a positive outcome for coming middle, so he is more inclined to respond to that rather than engage with a stressful stimulus.

The behaviour itself was achieved through a basic shaping process. There are a variety of other fun games you can use like this; depending on the breed of dog, some games will appeal to their natural instincts more than others.

If you're interested in learning some of these simple techniques with your dog; ways to build bond, trust, communication and positive outcomes while out and about, don't hesitate to get in touch.

I'm doing this Reactivity Impact Challenge, and it's brilliant!! I will definitely be looking into the Level 6 Canine Behaviour Diploma with the Canine Behaviour College. ❤️🐾🐶

What is a REACTIVITY PERSONA? 🤔🐶

Reactivity doesn’t always look the same, and the behaviour we see can be driven by very different struggles underneath. 😓 One dog might rush into every interaction, another might explode from seemingly nowhere, while another is mentally halfway through the walk before they’ve even left the house! 🧠✨

Meet the 4 common REACTIVITY PERSONAS! ⬇️

⚡ The Chain Rusher!

They know how an interaction unfolds…but put the whole thing on fast-forward! They may charge towards dogs, rush greetings and struggle to disengage or slow down.

💥 The 0 to 100 Dog!

Everything seems fine…until suddenly it isn’t. These dogs can move into a BIG emotional response incredibly quickly, with barking, lunging or other coping behaviours appearing almost from nowhere.

🌧️ The Pessimist!

“Is that safe? Is that something to worry about?” These dogs can repeatedly question unfamiliar dogs, people, noises or changes until their stress bucket eventually overflows.

🚀 The Brain in Next Week Dog!

The lead comes out and their brain is already at the park! They’re constantly predicting what happens next, so arousal can build before the walk has even started.

And remember…dogs don’t have to fit neatly into ONE category! 🙌 There may be a little Chain Rusher, Pessimist AND Brain in Next Week happening at the same time. Identifying the patterns helps us understand where to focus our skill-building.

This is so important...

Reactivity =

Dogs & owners that need kindness, support, understanding, encouragement and empowerment - they need the skills to deal with the challenges they face.

Reactivity isn't always the obvious 'aggression' we picture when we hear that word. It is any type of reaction to a situation that is not comfortable for the dog and its owners.

Owners have a responsibility to acknowledge and address the issues, but they may not know where to start. They may feel they are drowning in the ocean of unfamiliarity. This is a paralysing place to be.

I'm excited to be starting my journey on canine behaviour and reactivity with some CPD from The Canine Behaviour College this coming week. I want to be able to help owners with reactivity issues; to be that kindness, that support, and that source of empowerment. ❤️🐾✨
