3 easy ways to prepare your pet for firework night🧨

- Create a 'den' at least four weeks before.
- Make sure your garden is secure, in case your pet gets spooked while outside.
- On the night, drown out the noise by closing the curtains and playing some music

If your pet still gets very stressed, speak to your vet for advice. They may be able to prescribe medication to help, but you’ll need to do this ahead of time so there’s enough time to find what works best for your pet. For more firework advice, visit our website https://pdsa.me/QYgr🐾

The infographic then goes into 3 tips to help make firework night easier by making a den using soft bedding and your pet's favourite toys, securing the garden plus closing the curtains and playing some music to drown out the noise. ]

🚨EMERGENCY FOCUS–GUT STASIS🚨

Gut stasis is a potentially deadly gastrointestinal disease in rabbits where the digestive system slows down or stops completely. This causes bacteria to build up in the intestines and releases harmful gases; this can cause organ failure and ultimately be fatal. If you are a rabbit owner, please take the time to familiarise yourself with the signs and symptoms as time is of the essence in these cases!

What are the symptoms?

🔴Reduced appetite or not eating
🔴Reduced or smaller faecal pellets or not passing any faeces
🔴Hiding away
🔴Grinding teeth
🔴Lethargy
🔴Hunched appearance or moving less

As a prey species, rabbits are very good at hiding signs of pain and illness. Symptoms can be subtle, if you notice anything different about your pet rabbits health it is best to act straight away.

How is it treated?

This condition is a true emergency and veterinary treatment should be sought straight away. Treatment usually involves medications to promote gut movement, pain relief and sometimes antibiotics. Imaging and/or blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. Fluid therapy and syringe feeding also form an important part of the treatment plan.

How can I help prevent this happening?

Several factors are at play in this condition. Diet, dehydration, stress, inactivity, ingestion of foreign materials and other diseases such as dental disease can cause gut stasis.

A diet that is 85% good quality feeding hay or grass, 10% greens and 5% good quality rabbit nuggets is ideal to keeping your rabbits gut healthy.

Providing a suitable, safe environment with plenty of space for exercise is important to help maintain good gut motility.

It is also vital to have your rabbits routinely checked by the vet team in order to pick up on any health issues before they become a risk factor.

If you ever suspect your rabbit is unwell, contact your vet straight away 📞

☀️Do not leave your dog in a hot car.
☀️Make sure they always has access to cool shaded areas.
☀️Avoid exercising in the heat. Walk dogs first thing in the morning or in the evening and avoid walking on hot pavements.
☀️ Just like us humans, our pets can get sun burnt. You can use a pet safe sun cream and apply to your pet.
☀️It can be extremely dangerous for your animal to consume lots of salt water.
☀️ Lickimats are a great way to keep your pets cool and provide mental stimulation for them when it is not possible too walk your dog.
☀️Dog/cat friendly ice lollies and ice cream is a great way to keep your pet cool - You can always make your own.
☀️Make sure Rabbits and Guinea PIgs have shade in their hutches/runs and have access to water at all times.
☀️ Pavements can become hot enough to cause pain, discomfort or even burn your dogs paws. The best way to check if the temperature of a pavement is too hot for your dog is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws

Please be mindful and if you have any signs of heat stroke please seek veterinary attention straight away 💚
