As canine therapists, we frequently tell ourselves the focus myth, the idea that we just need to focus completely on helping the dogs, and that our own needs can wait. This is a dangerous misconception.
You cannot provide excellent care to your patients if you are running on empty. After years of mentoring, I've seen far too many incredibly talented, dedicated therapists burnout because they give everything to their patients and leave nothing for themselves.
Self care is a vital risk management strategy, not an indulgence. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Your wellbeing is the foundation of your business and if you are not functioning at your best, you cannot provide a high quality service.
I feel so strongly about therapist self care and wellbeing that I have published a free Therapists' Blog called: The Resilient Therapist: Why Self-Care is a Clinical Necessity, Not a Luxury
For those that want to delve deeper there is a totally free CPD course called The Resilient Therapist.
