Our UK autumn is well and truly here! Crisp leaves, cooler mornings and damp air make this a wonderful time of year for our dogs.
We know that dogs “see” with their noses, and scenting provides immense mental stimulation while allowing them to engage their natural “dog brain.” Because the best scenting days are cool and moist, autumn in the UK is the perfect season for rich scent work and positive sensory engagement.

As therapists, the assessment process is the foundation of our clinical reasoning. When a human patient is admitted to a hospital, medical staff never rely on a single measurement. They take a range of vital signs, such as pulse, temperature and blood pressure, alongside a subjective assessment to build a clear picture of the patient’s dynamic health status.

The exact same principle applies to our canine patients and clients. To gain a complete and accurate perspective of each dog’s physiological state, therapists use a range of different, overlapping health checks.

As caring professionals, we naturally put the needs of our canine patients (and their worried owners) ahead of our own.

I completely understand the feeling of a clinic day being entirely consumed by physical assessments, complex treatments and the ever-present need for meticulous biosecurity. As canine therapists, we frequently tell ourselves the focus myth, the idea that we just need to focus completely on helping the dogs, and that our own needs can wait. This is a dangerous misconception.

You cannot provide excellent care to your patients if you are running on empty. After years of mentoring, I've seen far too many incredibly talented, dedicated therapists burnout because they give everything to their patients and leave nothing for themselves.

Self care is a vital risk management strategy, not an indulgence. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Your wellbeing is the foundation of your business and if you are not functioning at your best, you cannot provide a high quality service.

I feel so strongly about therapist self care and wellbeing that I have published a free Therapists' Blog called: The Resilient Therapist: Why Self-Care is a Clinical Necessity, Not a Luxury​
