Warm weather can be dangerous for dogs, especially inside cars. 🐶 🚗

Even if you park in the shade, leave the windows slightly open or only plan to be away for a few minutes, the temperature inside a car can rise very quickly.

Dogs can overheat fast, and heatstroke can be life-threatening.

Signs of overheating may include:

🐾 Heavy panting

🐾 Drooling

🐾 Weakness or wobbliness

🐾 Vomiting

🐾 Collapse

Please never leave your dog alone in a car. It is always safer to leave them at home, where they can stay cool and comfortable.

We wanted to talk about one of the many fantastic perks of being a client of Broadland House vets, and that is our new partnership with VidiVet!

From 16th June, all our registered clients will have COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE access to the VidiVet app! This means that you can contact a vet at any time of the day or night, by sending a video, photo or written message. You will always receive a video answer from a vet in less time than it takes to make a cup of tea!

We know that over 90% of concerns that pet owners have when we are closed don't need an out of hours appointment. So what better than having the support of a vet at your fingertips with unlimited messages! We see so much value in this service that we pay for it so that you don't have to!

We have asked our friends at VidiVet to send you 4 emails with registration links, starting on the 16th June. We will also tell you how to sign up here - so be sure to check back. It is crucial that you register using the same email address that we have on record for you.

If your cat stops eating for even a couple of days, bring them to us. Cats can develop hepatic lipidosis, a dangerous condition where fat builds up in the liver, and the liver starts to fail.

Signs to watch out for:

🐾 Not eating or eating much less (often 24–48 hours is enough to worry)

🐾 Lethargy and hiding more than usual

🐾 Vomiting or drooling

🐾 Rapid weight loss

🐾 Yellow gums/eyes/ears (jaundice)

🐾 Weakness or wobbliness

A cat can stop eating due to stress (moving house, a new pet or baby in the family) or due to illness (dental pain, infections and so on).

It’s important to know that overweight cats are at a higher risk if they suddenly stop eating.

If your cat isn’t eating normally for a full day (or you’re seeing any jaundice), call us right away. Early treatment can be lifesaving, and it often requires nutritional support to get calories back in safely.

Cats hide pain really well. 😿

Limping, sleeping more than usual, eating less, peeing outside the tray or being grumpier can all be signs that something’s wrong.

If you’ve noticed a change in your cat’s behaviour, get in touch with us.

Do you have both pets and children? 🤔

Teaching kids about boundaries when handling pets is extremely important. Here are our tips:

🐾 Supervise always.

🐾 Teach your kids to let the pet come to them.

🐾 Make sure they are gentle with their pets.

🐾 Ensure they respect the pet’s rest zones, such as areas for eating, sleeping, hiding and the litter box.

Kind reminder: be patient with your pet (and yourself) at the vet. 🩺

A vet practice has unfamiliar smells, sounds, and other animals. If your pet is a bit anxious and not behaving as they would at home, that’s normal.

We can go slower, use treats, and adapt the exam to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible!

If you have a new puppy or kitten in the house, you have a tiny explorer full of curiosity who will want to explore every corner of their new home.

Here’s a useful checklist to avoid emergency vet visits:

✅ Hide, cover or unplug cords and chargers.

✅ Everything that can be swallowed, think coins, kid toys, hair ties or socks, needs to be picked up and stored away.

✅ Make sure you don’t have any toxic plants at home or in your garden if you have an outdoor pet.

✅ Keep toxic foods, such as chocolate, grapes/raisins, xylitol gum, onions/garlic, out of reach.

✅ Keep medications and supplements stored in closed cabinets.

✅ Lock away any cleaning products.

✅ Use a lidded bin for trash and recycling.

✅ Secure any windows and balconies to make sure your pet can’t climb and fall.

✅ Keep your washing machine door closed at all times, since kittens love to climb into those.
