A week ago I drove my daughter down to her new house in Chichester, and as we arrived we spotted these poor trapped pigeons on the buildings nearby. I called a number of excellent wildlife rescues in the area, who all do an incredible job and all work together so very soon I was put in touch with West Sussex wildlife protection. I want to give a particularly HUGE shout out and thank you to West Sussex wildlife protection and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service for their fast response and amazing efforts to save the birds. Sadly, four pigeons had already died - they must have been struggling there for days in the brutal heat we’ve had.. Thankfully the remaining pigeons could get in and out easily, accessing their nests under the rafters. This was clearly a place where they had nested for years, yet the building ‘management’ team obviously decided that dead and dying birds stuck in the guttering because of the wiring they had badly installed to deter them, was better than a bit of poo which would easily wash away in the next rains 🙄

Our wildlife has a constant battle to survive. We as humans consistently make it even more difficult for them, destroying habitat, killing them, and poisoning their food sources. We all share the same planet and have the same rights to it. Yes, these are feral pigeons - feral now because we domesticated them and then decided we didn’t have a use for them any longer so abandoned them to fend for themselves. But why should any life be worth less because we decided so? 🐦

(The buildings and pigeons will continue to be monitored, and hopefully the wiring will be removed!)
