🐾Rhombus truly is a gentle giant🐾

He came to see as an elderly Newfoundland with arthritis of multiple joints. He had been prescribed lots of oral pain-killers but he was still struggling; but there are not many other good options.

In September, we tried steroid injections in both his elbow joints and within days he had a new lease of life. Rhombus was much more mobile and this continued for many months.

We saw him again last week as he was slowing down again and struggling to get up; this time he had pain in both his carpi (wrists).

Rhombus had steroid injections in both wrist joints and again he has a new lease of life and is much more mobile again.

Steroid injections are uncommonly used to treat joint pain for a number of reasons but sometimes needs must, and it can be worth trying unusual treatments…

😍Rhombus certainly thinks so 😍

🐾Scout’s story🐾

Scout was referred to us with a right tarsus comminuted calcaneal fracture with central tarsal bone fracture luxation.

In other words, she had an uncommon complex fracture of her foot meaning the foot was unstable and she could not weight bear.

Not good for any patient but especially for those who very much enjoy an active life.

Scout had a successful surgery and recovery. She is now doing brilliantly and is back to running canicross!

We are so pleased that Scout made such a great recovery from this very tricky fracture repair ❤

🐾 Big news for our patients 🐾

At Arthurs Veterinary Specialists we are proud to announce that our practice is now offering Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery for patients suffering from severe hip pain, arthritis, and hip dysplasia.

For many pets, chronic hip discomfort can affect every part of daily life — from walks and playing to simply getting up comfortably. Total hip replacement can provide a life-changing solution, helping restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.

Our surgeons have more than 25 years combined experience in Total Hip Replacement surgery; so your pet is in the safest of hands.

We routinely use pre and post-operative CT scans to plan the THR surgery as accurately as possible; similarly for post-operative assessment.

In the image below you can see our Specialist Veterinary Surgeons mid THR with the help of our Registered Veterinary Nurses . The second image is a patient's post operative CT scan showing the hip replacement implants after surgery.

Whether your dog is struggling with hip dysplasia, traumatic injury, or advanced arthritis, we are here to help guide you through every step of the journey.

👋 Please welcome Francisco to our Team 👋

Fran is the most recent specialist in Small Animal Surgery to join the team at Arthurs Veterinary Specialists. This means that, from now on, you may hear from him instead when you reach out to discuss a case, or refer a case to us.

Like many other orthopaedic surgeons, Fran is particularly interested in joint replacements, minimally invasive surgery, and traumatology. More unusually, he has also got an interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound, and evidence-based medicine.

We are all very happy to have Fran part of the team 🙂

❤️ Meet the gorgeous Maple ❤️

Maple presented to us with a very rare condition of her right shoulder; supraspinatus muscle contracture.

This is where the muscle becomes tight, the shoulder cannot flex normally and this results in the patient having an outwardly rotated limb which you can see in the picture.

She was referred to us from her own vets who were unsure what was wrong, but thankfully we were able to diagnose the condition quickly on examination.

Maple had surgery with us, the tendon was released (cut) and this resulted in immediate restoration of movement in Maple's shoulder and normal limb alignment.

❤️Roscoe's story❤️

Little Roscoe came to us last week with a fractured hip and tibia following a road traffic accident.

A CT scan was performed which provides essential imaging and then on Thursday morning, his fractures were repaired.

As Roscoe is only 4 months old, he enjoyed lots of cuddles with the nurses and here you can see two of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, Matthew and Ruby, giving Roscoe a nice bath to make him feel comfortable and fresh.

He is currently healing well and receiving physiotherapy. Get well soon Roscoe❤️‍🩹

✨Arthroscopy✨

Arthroscopy in dogs is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to look inside and treat joints using a tiny camera (arthroscope) and small instruments.

Think of it as “keyhole surgery” for joints.

The patient is placed under general anaesthesia and small 2-3mm incisions are made. The camera sends magnified images to the screen and treatment can also be performed at the same time.

This surgery is most commonly performed on the shoulder, elbow, stifle (knee) and hock (ankle).

In this picture, Gareth Arthurs is operating on a springer spaniels elbow. Once surgery has been performed it should leave the patient feeling much more comfortable ✨🐾
