A new proposal being discussed in the UK could significantly change the future of fishkeeping.

This proposal centres on a ‘positive list’ system, in which only a limited number of approved species would be allowed to be kept, sold, or traded. While the intention is to improve animal welfare, there are growing concerns within the industry about the potential unintended consequences.

Industry experts, including the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), warn that this approach could:

• Restrict fishkeeping to a very small number of species
• Exclude many commonly kept fish simply due to a lack of available data, rather than any proven risk
• Create more welfare issues, rather than solving them

At present, there is no clear evidence that a positive list system would improve animal welfare outcomes.

This is an important moment for fishkeepers, hobbyists, and businesses to have their voices heard.

🌿 Pond plants now back in stock! 👍🏻

Thinking about adding plants to your pond? Here’s why they’re a must-have for a healthy, balanced ecosystem:

💧 Natural filtration
Aquatic plants absorb excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, helping keep your water clear and reducing the need for chemicals.

🌱 Algae control
Plants compete with algae for nutrients and sunlight. Floating varieties such as water lilies provide shade, keeping water cooler and limiting algae growth.

🐟 Oxygenation
Submerged plants release oxygen during the day, which is essential for fish—especially in warmer months.

🛡️ Fish protection & habitat
Leaves and stems create shaded areas, sheltering fish from predators while also providing breeding spaces for fish and beneficial insects.

🌸 Aesthetics & erosion control
Not only do pond plants look beautiful in bloom, but marginal plants also help stabilise pond edges and prevent soil erosion.

🌿🐟 Pond season is nearly here!

As temperatures start to rise, your fish will slowly come out of their winter rest. With their metabolism increasing, they’ll begin feeding again — but it’s important to ease them back in gently.
A great way to start is with flake food. It’s easy to digest and helps you keep feeding controlled while their bodies adjust to the warmer conditions.

As temperatures rise, beneficial bacteria will start building back up — and they’re key to a healthy, clear pond. Here’s how you can support them:
🔹 Remove large debris with a net or pond vacuum🔹 Avoid deep cleaning — this can slow beneficial bacteria growth🔹 Add pond bombs to boost good bacteria and improve water clarity🔹 Use sludge bombs to break down leftover waste for your filter to remove🔹 Increase aeration — make sure pumps and aerators are running efficiently🔹 Carry out up to a 50% water change to remove toxins and add fresh minerals
Healthy bacteria = a balanced, thriving pond 🌱🐟
Keep it light, keep it steady, and your pond will be thriving in no time! 💧✨

Apistogramma Viejita Gold is a vibrant and stunning dwarf cichlid that stands out with its bright red markings and white belly. This peaceful species is perfect for aquarists looking to add a pop of colour and character to their aquarium. Tank mates should be mainly tetras rasboras and catfish wouldn’t put in with anything to big or robust. Males can be territorial when breeding, provide plenty of caves and hides to limit aggression. Will need a softwater aquarium with temperature set to 22 °c-28°c. 👍🏻👍🏻

October plant of the month is Anubis Nana Bonzai.

This hardy plant prefers its roots exposed for the best chance of growth. Attached onto bits of wood and rocks and allow to spread. Does not require a lot of light and will prefer shaded areas within your aquarium for best growth. 👍🏻
