⭐⭐⭐Sector Update⭐⭐⭐

The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has today been lifted across England, Wales and Scotland, following the latest outbreak assessment which reduced the risk of bird flu transmission from wild to kept birds from Medium to Low.

This means the mandatory biosecurity measures that have applied to all bird keepers are no longer a legal requirement.

Disease control zones around any confirmed cases will still apply locally, so if you are in a protection zone or captive bird monitoring zone the rules in that declaration continue to apply to you.

For pet professionals, particularly animal encounter providers, this is welcome news. Outdoor sessions involving poultry, ducks, or other captive birds can run and birds can have uncovered access to the outdoors, though good biosecurity remains best practice and the message from the Chief Veterinary Officers is clear - low risk does not mean no risk.

Animal Focused Alliance - keeping pet professionals current, confident and compliant.

🐾 Another productive afternoon representing the sector.

Today we had some fascinating discussions with the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission around animal licensing, training requirements, and the differences in how licensed activities are regulated across the UK.

As governments and regulators continue to review animal welfare legislation, it's more important than ever that the experiences and perspectives of pet professionals are part of the conversation.

While no changes have been announced, these discussions help us stay ahead of potential developments and ensure we're well placed to keep our members informed about any future proposals that could affect their businesses.

If changes to licensing requirements are proposed, our members will be among the first to know.

☀️ It's not just dogs and cats that feel the heat - rabbits and guinea pigs can struggle in hot weather too.

Heatstroke can become life-threatening very quickly, so a few simple changes can make a huge difference during warmer days.
🐇 Make sure fresh water is always available
🐹Keep hutches and enclosures in shaded, well-ventilated areas
🐰 Use cooling mats, frozen water bottles wrapped in towels, or ceramic tiles for pets to lie against
🐹 Offer water-rich vegetables as part of their diet
🐰 Avoid handling during the hottest parts of the day
🐹 Bring pets indoors if temperatures become excessive

⚠️ Watch for signs of heat stress, including: Heavy breathing, lethargy, drooling, weakness, or loss of appetite.

Remember — hutches placed in direct sunlight can become dangerously hot very quickly.
