Why does my puppy put absolutely everything in their mouth? 😅🐾
Puppies explore the world with their mouths. Shoes, sleeves, leaves, furniture and, unfortunately, our fingers, can all become part of the investigation!
Mouthing and picking things up are normal puppy behaviours. It doesn’t mean your puppy is aggressive or “naughty”; they’re learning about their surroundings, playing, teething and discovering what gets a reaction from us.
We can help by:
Offering suitable chews and toys before they find their own entertainment
Calmly swapping inappropriate items for something better
Avoiding chasing them, which can turn stealing into a brilliant game and create a lack of trust when they have something.
Rewarding them for choosing their toys and releasing objects
Making sure they’re getting enough rest, an overtired puppy can become a tiny land shark! 🦈
Keeping tempting or unsafe items out of reach while they’re learning
Rather than simply stopping puppies from using their mouths, we want to teach them what they can pick up, what they can chew and that giving something back is worthwhile.
These are some of the everyday puppy challenges we help owners understand and work through in class using kind, practical, reward based training.
