La Casella Feels like coming home…

Sunday we left our lake side free park up after and an attempt to run which turned into half run and half walk as the path didn’t go all the way around the lake so made it more awkward to run.

Stopping for fuel, lunch and a coffee we made our way out of Calabria, through Lazio and then finally in to Umbria. We let our friends know by message we were arriving a day earlier than expected and they seemed to be excited.

We arrived on the white road into La Casella and the feeling of being home swept over me. Our friends were pleased to see us and although we had messaged saying that we would eat in the van to save them any trouble they insisted we ate with them and the guests.

The food here is always great and this was no exception, presented with a four course meal and w**e in the banquet suit of the main building we enjoyed our evening in the company of our friends and their guests.

We slept in the van for the night in the carpark as we didn’t want to inconvenience the staff due to arriving early.

Monday morning we were up and out after coffee to grab some quick breakfast then take a walk to the stables to meet the new addition, Noisette. She was born 19 days after we left Italy earlier this year on the 20th March a beautiful bay filly with the cutest face and the most inquisitive personality. She came strolling up to me like we had met already and followed me around the field as said hello to the horses individually.

We walked around making a list of jobs that we could see needed doing and were happily surprised that the volunteers through the summer and start of autumn had kept the place tidy and even organised the storage areas. All the horses were looking well and hopefully I could spend two months schooling a few to help the OG’s out on the customer rides.

We were invited to a lunch at 1pm with our friends and two of their guests. We hadn’t seen Nino in the evening so it was nice to finally say hello at lunch, he welcomed us back and let us know of a new project he had for Darren to start with and we discussed plans for Cappuccino’s castration in the winter months. We hope Nino could see a some improvement in our Italian comprehension and speech, however little it may be.

After lunch we took a look at the project Nino had mentioned and moved a few things from the van garage to our working areas. We moved into our apartment up at La Palombara and showered ready for dinner. We took a walk down to arrive just before 8pm and had dinner with the guests, even staying late to talk to a lovely American couple over drinks by the fire place out by the coffee bar. They gave us a lift back up to our apartment as they actually staying next door to us, saving us walk up the hill in the dark.

The days are already rolling along this week with mostly lovely weather so we have started ticking off things on our list around the stables. I’ve helped with some rides for guests and even started working from the ground with Darren the horse again to try and get him working with in the school. There are four horses that need some work to get them suitable for constant use for customers so it’s going to be a busy two months. Already we have had to stop eating desserts every night as we have noticed the pounds start to creep on again because the food is soo good here.

Darren woke adamant we were going to go out for a run as we were parked right near the beach and I got swept along with his enthusiasm begrudgingly, a little hung over.
The sun was shining and it was already warming up. We ran along the promenade as far as the path went away from town then back along heading into town where it was already starting to get busy and then back the other way to the end then down some steps and up a hilly cobbled path. Darren continued for a bit passed the cobbled path while I headed back rounding my run up to respectable 5k. I was boiling by the time I got to the van and even a cold shower didn’t calm my glowing red face and body 🙄

After showers and breakfast we headed off for our next destination Palermo. With a secure park up outside the city as we drove through the city we could see it was going to be busy. We parked up in what was just a basic guarded car park with a few facilities for motorhomes but it was a safe place to leave Bertie while we ventured into the city. The guy who booked us in at the carpark had said it was better to take a bus into the city as it was a 4k walk each way, we walked it as we thought we would see more and it would be good exercise for us.

It wasn’t the nicest of walks into Palermo along busy noisy littered roads. As we reached the centre it was very busy and found a back street arancini vendor thinking it would be the cheaper authentic way of experiencing Arancini 😂
The best part was a guy with a huge speaker coming along and blasting out ‘Sara Perche Ti Amo’. He was soon chased off by one of the traders.
Two bottles of b**r and two average tasting and sized arancini cost us €20, which we thought was quite steep considering the surroundings. We paid without argument and went off to continue our exploring.

The historical parts seemed spreed out far apart so there was lots of walking involved. We found a nice bar to try some more arancini and saw a guy with a real barn owl on his shoulder randomly walking around the street stopping to talk to tourists and locals along the way.

We headed out to the harbour to see what that had to offer and stopped for a b**r at one of the cool bars along the very modern harbour. As we walked along we found a classic car exhibition, Darren was in heaven but even more so when we stumbled upon the Ferrari meet up. With over 100 modern Ferrari all flexing their muscles so to speak. In groups they seem to leave the carpark for a cruise around the city and then return. We got some pictures and videos then decided as it was now dusk to head back to our park up. We noticed a pub restaurant opposite our park up was lit up so popped in to get a drink and ended up getting dinner too. I had gnocchi al Sicilia and Darren had a carbonara. The plates were huge and I couldn’t finish it, so plucking up the courage I asked to take away my leftovers all in Italian.

We settled in the van for a nights sleep which was disrupted by our neighbours dogs barking constantly as they had been left in the van and we guess the humans had gone for dinner somewhere and were still out. Darren couldn’t sleep through it and in the end checked with the night staff at the site if we could move away from the noise. Darren moved us so we weren’t directly next to the barking dogs and with ear plugs in we managed to get to sleep eventually.

Waking up on Wednesday with the views from Pollina and the gym equipment we headed outside after our morning coffee to exercise while enjoying our surroundings.

We then had venture up quite a steep slope in the motorhome to join the main road back down out to the dual carriageway, so I went ahead on foot to make sure the coast was clear as we were both concerned about the overhang of the motorhome. As it turned out Bertie cleared the dip with no problem and we were back on the road.

Our next stop a car park opposite the beach in the town of Cefalù. The park up was nothing special other than being right near the beach and a healthy walking distance to town. We parked up and looked for someone to pat but there was no one in the shed or on site anywhere.

We headed out for breakfast, wanting to try some local delicacies and start exploring the town. A beautiful historical costal town with a buzzing atmosphere and still lots of visitors even in October. We stopped in a waterside bar called Cannoli to experience, you guessed it Cannoli and coffee. I went for a ricotta filled Cannolo and Darren a half ricotta and half pistachio. I tried a crem which was basically coffee and ice cream or gelato and Darren stuck to his usual Cappuccino.

For lunch we made it to a place that done Arancini and Lemoncello spritz, ticking two boxes for me and Darren had a b**r with his lol

We didn’t venture up Le Rocce as I just wasn’t in the mood for it especially in the heat and the fact you had to pay. We walk around the town, bought some gifts for Christmas and tried more food and drink before heading back to the van to change into beach ware.

We had a couple of hours on the beach before dinner time which was absolute bliss and then walked back into town via the bars for drinks before dinner. Cefalù being our favourite place so far, for sure! We sat in a beach bar watching the sunset then walked around looking for an authentic Sicilian restaurant. Finding a busy one in the back streets, I was able to confidently ask for a table for two in Italian…a very small success but a success for me nevertheless. For starters we shared a sea food platter with octopus, squid and various other fish. Main dishes I went for the traditional busiata with sea food and Darren had a bigger type of pasta with wild boar ragu. We were too stuffed for dessert so went for a walk after dinner stopping at one last bar on the way back to the van for a last drink of the night. I had to have one last limoncello spritz before bed 😂

The walk back to the van we said Good evening to pretty much everyone we passed in Italian of course. 😂

After the stormy night we woke to a very puddly campsite but blue skies and no more rain in sight. Darren went out for a quick run while used having electricity hook to my advantage, taking the opportunity to wash, dry and straighten my hair.
Absolute bliss for a vanlife lady with wavy hair that doesn’t curl nicely but never dries straight either 😂

After breakfast we headed off along the northern coast of the island to a place I had seen on a post on a page I follow who lives in Sicily Santi and Dara in Italy.
Pollina a little medieval town perched about 600 meters (1,968 feet) above sea level in the Madonie Regional Natural Park, roughly 70 kilometers east of Palermo and 13 to 18 kilometers from Cefalù.

Well the climb up to the parking spot in Pollina was a little scary in Bertie with a couple of wheels spinning moments but we made it, but boy did it take some guts and fuel from Bertie. Up in the clouds almost we had found a park up on park4night for free just below the actual town. Since the last person reviewed it the local community had added a large bench and outdoor gym equipment to the waste land area but no one seemed to mind us being parked there next to it.

We walked up to the main town which was still a steep climb and took in the panoramic views of the breathtaking landscape from the Teatro Pietra Rosa: An open-air rock-cut amphitheater and Maurolico Tower: A square stone tower used as an astronomical observatory in the 16th century by scientist Francesco Maurolico.
The streets around the town were so quaint and we enjoyed weaving in and around the cobbled roads before resting at the only village bar for an aperitivo before sunset.

We then went back down to where Bertie was parked to take in the views, eat and enjoy the sunset in the comfort of our home on wheels.
