TICK SEASON IS HERE… AND THE LITTLE BLIGHTERS DIDN’T EVEN ASK PERMISSION! 🕷️🐾

If you’ve been off on holiday, exploring the countryside, wandering through long grass, woodland paths, moorland, or fields where sheep and cattle graze, it’s worth adding a quick “tick check” to your dog’s post-walk routine.

Ticks are tiny hitchhikers that climb aboard for a free meal. They don’t jump or fly – they simply wait in grass and vegetation for a passing dog (or human!) to brush past. They’re particularly common around sheep and deer grazing areas and can be found throughout the UK, especially during the warmer months.

The good news? Most ticks can be removed safely and easily when spotted early.

👀 Where should you look?

Ticks love to hide in warm, cosy places:

🐾 Around the ears
🐾 Under collars and harnesses
🐾 Around the neck
🐾 Between the toes
🐾 Under the legs and armpits
🐾 Around the face and muzzle

A tick often feels like a small lump or skin tag when you run your hands through your dog’s coat.

Now for the important bit…

❌ Don’t panic.

❌ Don’t cover it in butter or oil.

❌ Don’t try burning it off.

❌ And please don’t grab it and squeeze it with your fingers.

The aim is to remove the tick without squeezing its body. Squeezing can increase the risk of infected material being pushed back into the skin.

This is why we always recommend a proper tick remover

🐾 HOW TO REMOVE A TICK

1️⃣ Part the fur so you can clearly see the tick.

2️⃣ Slide the tick remover underneath the tick.

3️⃣ Lift gently and twist until the tick releases.

4️⃣ Check the tick has come away completely.

5️⃣ Dispose of it safely and wash your hands.

If you’re unsure, or the tick is in an awkward place such as near the eye, your vet will be happy to help.

If you’d feel better afterwards you can always spray the area with an antiseptic spray, to ensure no bacteria is present.

💚 One thing we always tell our customers…

Finding a tick doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong.

In fact, it’s often a sign your dog has been out doing exactly what dogs love best — sniffing every hedge, exploring every path and generally living their best muddy, adventurous life.

The important thing is knowing what to look for and being prepared when you find one.

So next time you’re checking paws for mud, grass seeds, half a forest and that mysterious smell they insist on rolling in… have a quick tick check too.

Your dog might not thank you for it.

But their skin certainly will. 🐶💚

Tick removers are available in-store if you’d like to keep one in your dog walking kit. Hopefully you’ll never need it… but if you do, you’ll be very glad it’s there!
