Equine Retirement at Lowertown Farm

Equine Retirement at Lowertown Farm One of Devon's Original Retirement Livery Yards

Home of Blackator Dartmoor Ponies

Lowertown Farm is set in a peaceful rural hamlet within the Dart valley, four miles away from the picturesque village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor on Dartmoor. Surrounded by 93 acres of farmland with open moorland above and below the farm. Fairly close to the villages of Ashburton, Holne, Chagford, Princetown and Buckfastleigh.

Nestled in the beautiful Dart Valley, tucked away from main roads Lowe

rtown Farm is the ideal location to retire your horse. At Lowertown Farm we aim to provide affordable livery packages to suit your horse during their retirement. We believe it's important to provide a loving, caring home for horses no matter what age or reason for their retirement. Horses are kept within a mixed herd environment with other horses that match their individual personalities and their seasonal grazing requirements. Providing that individual, specialist care for your horse is vital whilst allowing them time to be 'just horses' during their retirement.

Met Paul last year when he was ringing the offspring.

A remarkable return journey - four years in a row. 🐦

Meet AVY7136, a female pied flycatcher that was ringed as a chick in 2022.

Bird ringing involves fitting a bird with a uniquely numbered leg ring, allowing us to identify birds when they are recaptured. This helps us learn more about their movements, lifespan and migration.

Since being ringed, AVY7136 has been recorded at our Blackadon Nature Reserve in 2024, 2025 and now again in 2026.

What's even more remarkable? Each time, she has returned to the very same nest box! 🏡

It's astonishing that such a tiny bird can complete a 9,000-mile round trip between Africa and Dartmoor year after year, travelling back to the exact place where she nested before.

A huge thank you to our volunteer Paul, whose long-term monitoring of Blackadon's pied flycatchers has made discoveries like this possible.

First case of Equine Flu in Devon reported this morning, no idea whereabouts as they never say.

Devon's a pretty big county and hopefully the yard has good biosecurity and manage to keep it contained. Thoughts are with the yard affected. I guess it was just a matter of time with the number of daily cases being reported via SMS and the number of horses moving around the country with events/buying/selling etc.

Hopefully it's not too close to Dartmoor and the feral pony (unvaccinated) population.
