Tails of Obedience Fun whilst learning is the key

** This training has been completed by me K9 Training**

๐Ÿพ 8 weeks old โ†’ 14 weeks old. 4 sessions.

Meet Coco, an 8-week-old Cocker Spaniel whose owners had one main goal: to be able to take her into social environments and have a pup who could settle and remain calm, even with other humans and dogs around.

Over 4 sessions across 6 weeks, we focused on the foundations:

๐Ÿพ Clear yes & no markers
๐Ÿพ A reliable โ€œplaceโ€ in any environment
๐Ÿพ Prioritising calmness and neutrality

At just 14 weeks old, the result is what you see in this video. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Coco is settled in a social environment with unfamiliar dogs and humans nearby โ€” exactly what her owners wanted from the start.

Massive credit to the owners. They took every critique on board, trusted the process and put the work in between sessions. That shows how consistency matters.

Donโ€™t wait for problems to develop before you start training. Build the foundations from day one.

๐ŸŽฅ Watch Coco put it all into practice.

Just me being me with a weather warning for DOGS that are of SENIOR AGE (8+ years):

The "Feels Like" Risk: When humidity climbs above 70%, a dog's ability to cool themselves through panting drops drastically. The moisture in the air prevents their breath from evaporating, which can quickly lead to dehydration and heat stress. The dew point also matters, today Newport's Dew Point is at 18ยฐ so very noticeably humid to us, the dogs will feel it more than we do....

The Bottom Line:
On a day like this, a brisk walk or energetic play is dangerous for an older/senior or compromised (underlying health issues) dog.

Why Age and Medical Issues Matter:
Older dogs (typically over 8-10 years) and dogs with underlying illnesses are in a high-risk category for heatstroke. Your dog may be vulnerable if they have:

*Heart or respiratory conditions: The heart and lungs must work much harder in humid heat, leading to labored breathing or collapse.

*Obesity: Excess weight insulates the body and creates extra strain on their cardiovascular system.

*Arthritis: While warm weather is sometimes easier on stiff joints, the stress of dealing with high humidity can exacerbate discomfort and lead to fatigue.

How to keep them safe:

โ–  Monitor for Overheating: Keep a close eye out for signs of heatstroke, which include heavy panting, drooling, red gums, or lethargy.

โ–  Restrict Outdoor Time: Skip the long walks and strenuous activities. Limit your dog's outdoor exposure to short, leisurely toilet breaks.

โ–  Create a Cool Environment: Keep them indoors in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Provide constant access to fresh, cool water and consider utilising a cooling mat.

โ–  Play Indoors: Instead of walking, use puzzle toys or gentle indoor scent games to keep their minds occupied.

I used to be a sun worshiper until I started working with dogs...

Guys, I don't want to be lazy, it's not that I want to be sunbathing, I would love nothing more than to be able to carry on my walks/sessions as normal in these types of heat...

Sun stroke is a killer - I am NOT risking anyone's dog's life for money...

If I can rearrange walks/sessions to cooler times of the day, I most certainly will.

I'm here for the dogs and what's in their best interest ๐Ÿซถ

Things to consider when taking your dogs out in heat:

*Age - Pups bodies are not efficient enough to regulate their temps. Senior dogs are close to the same as pups.

*Breed - Flat faced dogs already have a disadvantage with their breathing, so adding heat and moisture to that, is most definitely a dangerous combination.

*Colour - White dogs (those with pink skin) are more prone to skin cancer. Their bodies lack melanocyte cells which are used to produce adequate levels of melanin that protects the skin. Black dogs, absorb the heat, meaning they can over heat quickly.

*Weight - Obese dogs can over heat quickly.

*Health.

I have seen what heat stroke can do and how quickly it can develop.

It's not nice.
It's scary.
Stay safe ๐Ÿซถ
