I keep seeing posts condemning the backing of 2yr old horses and generally speaking the argument is exclusively based on the fact that bone growth plates do not finish growing until 5-8yrs of age depending on the breed.

So. Food for thought: the attached screenshots are from OrthoInfo.org but you can go ahead and Google any credible scientific/medical page or journal to verify the information. In summary you will find that it is globally accepted that human bones do not finish growing until circa 18-25yrs old, some say even older. It is also GLOBALLY ACCEPTED that the best way to ensure proper bone development, density and strength is through appropriate weight-bearing exercise in the key developmental years ie puberty onwards (which incidentally is 2yrs onwards for horses).

I'm not condoning intense and physically brutal programs that try to make 2yr olds look like 5yr olds, and I'm definitely not condoning backing programs which focus on physically exhausting a youngster (by lunging, bucking out etc) to ensure compliance. But I will defend to the death the opinion that gently starting a horse at around 2yrs old to understand and trust the process of carrying a rider is the kindest, healthiest and fairest way to back a horse.

So Karen can go ahead and break her 5yr olds, I'll just be here quietly starting happy baby ponies.

This moment is so precious ❤️ Wilden Silverstone (2023 AQHA gelding bred by Wilden Quarter Horses) learning how to move in a saddle for the first time and seeking a moment of support and reassurance. The trust these young horses give us is so incredible, it humbles me every single time.

Lifelong Learning....

Most of you know that Bob Reader has been, and continues to be, my dearest mentor, coach and friend. He has had a huge influence on my horsemanship journey and success. Bob has always emphasised the importance of lifelong learning - that horsemanship is a journey from the cradle to the grave, we never stop learning. I think this is just about the most valuable lesson anyone can learn when it comes to horses.

I learn something new from every horse, every rider, every lesson. And I try to watch or participate in clinics and lessons with other trainers as much as I possibly can for the same reason. I think it is important to also look outside of our industry as there is something to be learned regardless of the discipline!

This evening I will be taking my 3yr old reining prospect to a Pole Clinic with a well established Trec/Classical instructor. Its going to be a ton of fun and we will definitely learn loads!

As Bob would say, good horsemanship is good horsemanship!

Keep learning, keep an open mind, stay humble 🥰

Had a couple trees fall across our fence line, we dont have a tractor (or a chainsaw) but that doesnt stop us! All you need is elbow grease and a couple well bred reining horses, I mean ranch horses 😅😍 💪

Looking for a solid riding horse for a lady client.

The client:
- Novice rider with low confidence, needs an honest friend.
- Budget up to £7k
- Horses at home on the farm, turnout or stable
- Has support from local instructor
- Loving long term home
- Mostly hacking

The horse needs to be:
- mare or gelding
- 6-15 yrs old
- solid in traffic and open spaces, hacks alone or in company
- English or Western
- Any breed
- 14hh - 16.2hh

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for the first TBT Clinic at Holme Lacy College! We had a wonderful group of riders and horses at different stages of education but all working with softness and heaps of try! It was fantastic to see you all and to see the huge progress you have all made! 😍
