methods...
We only used kind, effective methods to teach your dog manners. Positive reinforcement and motivation is used to help your dog choose to carry out required tasks. The higher the value of the reward (food/play/love) to your dog, the more likely he will be to repeat a behaviour (good or bad!) Once we have shaped a desired behaviour we reward randomly to strongly reinforce it. This is the quickest and most enjoyable method for both owner and dog.

On Sunday, Torvi & Wyatt visited a pop-up eye clinic in Kirtling to have their eyes tested before I make any future breeding decisions. 👀🐾

Anyone who knows me will have heard me talk about the importance of health testing when breeding dogs. I see so many young dogs with behavioural issues that can be linked to underlying health conditions, some of which may be reduced or avoided through responsible breeding practices.

So, here I am practising what I preach!

Many thanks to James Oliver Veterinary Ophthalmology Canine Eye Testing for providing such an incredible service. The day was exceptionally well organised, low stress for the dogs, and very thorough. I would highly recommend them to anyone considering eye testing for their dogs.

I’m delighted to say that both dogs passed with flying colours and achieved a Gonioscopy Grade 1. 🥳

⬜ Hips and elbows still to go

Health testing is certainly an expensive process, but in my view it’s an essential investment in the future health and welfare of the breed.

Meet Jack 🐾

Jack and his lovely owner came to see me because Jack had become increasingly reactive towards other dogs.

Our first behaviour session took place at my field, where I was able to assess his behaviour around my own dogs. It quickly became clear that, although Jack is curious about other dogs, he generally doesn’t want them in his personal space. Over time, he has learned to use aggressive displays to create the distance he feels he needs.

By focusing on lead-handling techniques, learning to read his body language, and giving him the time and space to observe from a comfortable distance, Jack began to relax and disengage on his own.

These photos are from our second session out in “the wild”, where we enjoyed a lovely, relaxed mooch while practising those same techniques in a real-world environment.

We were even joined by my next client, who is much further along in the process and having great success. Unfortunately, I was too busy coaching to take any photos, but it was fantastic to see both dogs coping so well and making such positive choices.

I’m looking forward to seeing Jack’s confidence continue to grow. 🌟🐕💙

Some new faces in Graduate Class this week!

We worked on stays with distractions, group heelwork, distance control, go-round behaviours, and recalls with distractions.

This is one of my favourite classes to teach. It’s such a lovely, social group, and we try all sorts of exercises to challenge and stretch the teams. Sometimes my hare-brained ideas don’t quite go to plan, but we always have plenty of fun giving them a go!

Special congratulations to Kayleigh & Socks! 🎉

They achieved their Beginner Gundog Distinction, dropping just one mark for some extremely enthusiastic (but very bouncy 😂) heelwork!

Socks is a rescue dog with a tendency to overreact, and Kayleigh has worked incredibly hard to help him reach this point. Their progress together has been amazing to watch, and this achievement is a real testament to the dedication, patience, and training that Kayleigh has put in.

A fantastic result and something to be very proud of. Well done both! 👏🐾

Catching up on some of our posts after half term!

A huge congratulations to Linda & Stanley on passing their Foundation Gundog assessment with a Distinction. 🎉

Stanley isn’t naturally the bravest dog, so it’s been wonderful to see his confidence grow throughout the course. We’re incredibly proud of everything they’ve achieved together.
