Social media has convinced people that progress should look impressive.

The dog that suddenly stops reacting.
The perfect recall.
The before and after video.

In reality, some of the moments that make me happiest are much less obvious than that.

A dog recovering more quickly than they did last month.
A dog noticing a trigger and choosing not to react.
A dog finally getting some proper sleep.
A person feeling confident enough to try something they would have avoided before.

The reality is that most behaviour change happens in small unassuming moments. The challenge is learning to spot them so you can celebrate the wins that prove you are moving in the right direction and progress is taking place.

What's a small win you've had with your dog recently?

Dogs are often described as intelligent because they can learn commands and solve simple problems.

But one of the most remarkable aspects of canine intelligence is how closely dogs observe human behaviour.

Dogs watch people constantly.

They notice subtle movements, routine changes and patterns in human activity that humans themselves often overlook.

For example, many dogs can predict a walk long before the lead appears.
They may notice changes in the owner’s routine, clothing or body language that indicate a walk is about to happen.

Similarly, dogs who struggle with separation anxiety often begin reacting before the owner leaves the house. They may become tense when the owner picks up keys, puts on shoes or moves toward the door.

These behaviours show how strongly dogs learn through observation and pattern recognition.

The dog is not reacting to the event itself. They are reacting to the signals that predict the event.

Understanding how dogs learn from these patterns can be extremely helpful when addressing behaviour problems.

Sometimes changing the signals that predict an event can significantly change how the dog responds to it.

I have had many clients jokingly comment that their dogs are 'stupid' and every time, I challenge that, because when it comes to reading body language, emotions, and predictive patterns, our dogs win hands down.

We spend a lot of time trying to train our dogs, but they're busy training themselves on us too. What has your dog learned about you?

If your answer is "nothing", I suspect your dog may know more about you than you know about yourself. 😆

One of the biggest frustrations owners experience is when their dog behaves well during training exercises but struggles to apply that behaviour in everyday life.

For example, a dog may respond beautifully to cues in the house but ignore them when outside.

They may settle calmly during structured training sessions but struggle to relax during normal household activity.

This difference occurs because dogs learn behaviours within specific contexts.
A behaviour learned in a quiet environment with minimal distractions does not automatically transfer to a busy environment filled with unpredictable things going on.

From the dog’s perspective, these situations feel completely different.

This is why behaviour training usually needs to progress gradually through different environments.

A dog may first learn a behaviour in a calm setting, then practice it in slightly more stimulating environments before eventually applying it in more challenging situations.

Skipping these steps often leads to frustration because the dog is asked to perform a behaviour in a context where they have not yet learned to succeed.

Gradual exposure to increasingly complex environments helps the dog build confidence and reliability.

If your dog listens perfectly indoors but seems to forget everything outside, follow the page. I regularly explain the WHY behind different behaviour patterns like this.

When behaviour problems appear, many owners feel overwhelmed because everything seems connected.

The dog reacts on walks.
They bark at visitors.
They struggle to settle at night.
They panic when left alone.
They guard certain objects or spaces.

When multiple behaviours appear together, it can feel impossible to know where to begin.

One framework I use to simplify complex behaviour cases is something I call the State–Trigger–Recovery model.

First we look at state.
What emotional and physiological state is the dog in before the behaviour occurs?
Some dogs begin the day already highly alert and aroused, which makes them far more likely to react to everyday stimuli.

Second we look at triggers.
What specific conditions cause the behaviour to appear? This might include environmental changes, approaching dogs, unfamiliar people, sudden noises, movement, frustration or social pressure.

Third we look at recovery.
How quickly does the dog return to baseline after the event? Some dogs recover within minutes, while others remain elevated for hours.

Dogs who struggle with recovery often experience what behaviourists call stress accumulation. Each stressful event adds to the previous one until the dog eventually reaches a point where even small triggers produce large reactions.

Understanding these three elements often reveals patterns that were previously unseen.

Once you understand the dog’s state, triggers and recovery patterns, behaviour plans become far more targeted and effective.

If your dog seems to react much more strongly after busy or stressful days, stress accumulation may be part of what's causing that picture.

Have you ever noticed your dog reacting more strongly the day after something exciting, stressful or out of routine?

Some dogs are naturally more sensitive to environmental changes than others.

These dogs tend to notice subtle changes in sound, movement and social dynamics more quickly.

Sensitivity itself is not a problem. In many working breeds it is actually an asset, allowing dogs to respond quickly to environmental information.

However, highly sensitive dogs may also become overwhelmed more easily in busy or unpredictable environments.

They may react strongly to sudden noises.
They may struggle with unfamiliar visitors.
They may become hypervigilant in new environments.
They may take longer to recover after stressful experiences.

Understanding sensitivity helps owners avoid interpreting these behaviours as stubbornness or deliberate disobedience.

Sensitive dogs often thrive when their environment becomes more predictable and when they are gradually introduced to new experiences rather than being pushed into them too quickly.

With the right support, many sensitive dogs become much more confident in their ability to cope and manage situations.

If you live with a dog who seems to notice absolutely everything happening around them and you want to get them the help they need to get in touch or follow this page for more insights.

When people describe their dog as reactive, they're usually describing the behaviour they can see.

Barking.
Lunging.
Growling.
Jumping.
Pulling.

But those behaviours don't tell us why the dog is reacting.

A dog barking at another dog may be frightened.
They may be frustrated.
They may already be carrying a high level of stress before the trigger appears.
Or they may have practised that response so many times it has become their default.

The behaviour can look similar from the outside whilst being driven by very different emotional states.

That's one of the reasons behaviour work isn't about finding a one-size-fits-all solution.

Understanding what your dog is experiencing in that moment gives you a much clearer starting point.

Which type of reactivity do you think best describes your dog?

When dogs display difficult behaviour, one of the most common pieces of advice owners receive is to provide more exercise.

While exercise is important, it is not always the solution people expect.
Some dogs are not struggling because they lack physical activity. They are struggling because their overall arousal levels remain elevated for long periods of time.

High-intensity exercise can sometimes increase arousal rather than reduce it, particularly in dogs who already struggle to regulate excitement.

For example, dogs who regularly engage in high-speed games, repetitive ball throwing or highly stimulating environments may become conditioned to operate at very high levels of arousal.

When those dogs return home, they may find it difficult to transition into calmer states. This is why behaviour plans often include a balance between physical exercise and activities that encourage decompression and exploration.

Activities such as sniffing walks, gentle exploration of new environments, or slower-paced movement allow the dog’s nervous system to process information without constantly escalating arousal.

Research into canine behaviour consistently shows that olfactory exploration plays a significant role in emotional regulation for dogs. When dogs are allowed to engage with the environment through scent, it often has a calming effect compared to high-intensity activity.

If your dog seems more hyper after exercise rather than calmer, this is a pattern worth looking at.

Some days courage looks like booking the behaviour consultation.

Some days it looks like taking your dog out after a difficult walk yesterday.

Some days it looks like putting the lead on and trying again when part of you would rather stay at home.

Living with a reactive, anxious or sensitive dog can be exhausting. There are days when it feels like everybody else's dog is moving forwards while you're stuck dealing with the same challenges over and over again.

Progress isn't always found in the big breakthroughs.

Sometimes it's found in the person who keeps showing up for their dog, even when it's hard.

If today wasn't the day you hoped for, tomorrow is another opportunity to start again. ❤️
