Before you label a dog as stubborn, distracted, or disobedient (eye roll), ask yourself one question. Could they be in pain?

Pain doesn't always look obvious. It can show up as:
• Reactivity
• Avoidance
• Slower responses
• Reluctance to perform cues
• Changes in behaviour or mood

Training through discomfort can create frustration for both ends of the lead. Taking the time to rule out pain helps us understand the why behind the behaviour and ensures we're setting our dogs up for success.

Good training starts with listening to what the dog is telling us.

Find yourself a dog trainer & medical professional that can spot subtle signs and help you every step of the way, that’s me btw.

Have you ever discovered that a behaviour issue was actually linked to pain or discomfort?

Keep your dog close around joggers!

Even “friendly” dogs can create dangerous situations for runners by:
• causing trips and falls
• triggering previous injuries
• frightening people who are nervous around dogs
• creating unpredictable situations for both the runner and your dog

From experience, many dogs find runners exciting or stimulating. Some simply want a quick sniff to investigate, some want to chase!
One moment of poor recall can put your dog in the path of bikes, roads & other dogs.

Keeping your dog close around joggers keeps everyone safe so please stay aware of the people around you.

Would your dog ignore a jogger?

I didn’t just make a few mistakes… I got puppyhood completely wrong.

• I let him cry it out
• I focused on obedience over understanding
• I overwhelmed him instead of guiding him
• I relied on anti pull gear instead of communication
• I told him off for growling instead of listening to what he was trying to say
• I even sent him to strangers homes because he couldn’t be left alone and I was desperate

At the time, I thought I was doing the right thing.

Some of you might read this and think, “I’d never do that.”
But the truth is… you don’t know what you don’t know.

That’s why I’ll never judge any client who comes to me.

Because I’ve been that owner.
I’ve followed bad advice.
I’ve trusted the wrong people.
I’ve done things I’d never do now.

And that’s exactly why I do what I do today, so you don’t have to learn the hard way like I did.

I still carry guilt from those puppyhood mistakes… but I’m incredibly lucky to have Rudi.
He’s the reason I’ve grown, learned, and become who I am today and because of him, every dog I have the privilege of working with will benefit from those lessons.

The best thing you can do for your reactive dog?
Slow down.

Stop.Pause.Breathe.

Before we ask anything of our dog we need to create a nervous system that can offer it.

Put the phone away.Soften the lead.Take a moment to notice what they’re noticing.

When we rush, tighten, or push on… reactivity often rises. When we slow down and give them space to process their world, we give them safety.
And safety changes everything.

It really is simpler than you think 💛

Sudden change in your dog’s behaviour?
Consider pain.

Too many ‘training’ or ‘behavioural’ cases are actually dogs screaming “I’m sore”.
Behaviour is communication.

⚠️Previously ‘proofed’ behaviours that are now seemingly lost?
⚠️Used to sleep through the night and now isn’t?
⚠️Not wanting to go out for walks?
⚠️Changes in eating habits?
⚠️Barking when left alone when previously used to settle fine?
⚠️Touch sensitive and guarding space?
⚠️Suddenly sensitive to noises?
⚠️Barking excessively?
⚠️Excessive panting, shaking off, licking?
⚠️Indoor toilet accidents when previously toilet trained?
⚠️Seeking affection more, appearing clingy?
⚠️Aggressive behaviours?
⚠️ANY changes in behaviour?

You see where i’m going.…
Consider pain ‼️

Most training cases should start with a health check by a veterinary professional.

*Not all dogs show pain in a veterinary setting, if that’s the case, most vets will be happy to discuss a pain trial*

Let dogs sniff. Slow down.
Stop pulling them along.

It’s not bad behaviour.
It’s being a dog. It’s how they process the world.

Meet that basic need or don’t get a dog.
Simple.

More sniffing = calmer walks.
